'"^his publication is the 10**' in the series giving statistics of examination
results of Boards of Secondary and Higher Secondar>' Education as also
of Intermediate/Pre-University Examination for the years 1991 and
1992. The previous issue contained similar results for the years 198^ and 1990.
2. In Case of Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tripura and Maharashtra there were glaring
variations in the dataTSupplied and these were conveyed to them for reconciliation but no
reply has been received from these boards so far and hence, non-reconciled data in the
case of these five boards hi^s been included.
3. In Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and West
Bengal, therfe are |wo boards for conducting Secondary and Higher Secondary
examinations or Intepnediate/Pre-University exsuninations. In Mizoram, the Higher
Secondary examination is conducted by the Controller, North Eastern Hill University,
Shillong. Among all Boards in the country, Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, U.P. is the
largest board as far as number of candidates appearing evety year is concerned. This
Board conducts both'High School and Intermediate examinations.
4. All the States/UTs who have introduced 10+2 Pattern, conduct separate
examinations for class X and class XII through their respective boards. Some States have
been conducting Intepnediate or Pre-Univ«-sity Examinations, which are equivalent to
this new pattern of education. Karriatâ has a separate Board for conducting Pre-
University examinatipns.
5. Various tables contained in this publicatjoji ^ve sex-wise detailed information in

respect of number of candidates appeared and passed along with pass percentage. Break- '
up of candidates who appeared and passed as regular students and as private candidates
from various Boards have also been given. Information on Scheduled Castes sInd
Results o f High School, Higher Secondary Interm^diaie/PUC Examinations, 1991 & 1992
Scheduled Tribe candidates appeared and passed in these examinations has also been
given in this publication separately.
6. Comparing the position of: e2tînati|»^,during the span of 3 years it has been
observed that the number of stucteiits a^pcired in S ^ io l I'Aiûial) Examination
increased from 84.27 lakh in 1990 in all the Boards to 87.87 lakh (4.27%) in 1991 and to
89.34 lakh (6.f02%) in 1992, The pass percentage in High School Annual Examination
was 47.74 in, lg9Q, 4t increased to 52.58% in 1991, then decreased to 44.09 in 1992. The
decrease has b e ^ o b f ^ ^ mainly in J&K, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Him^hal Pradesh
Boards of School Ed^^ôn. The U.P. Board during 1992 introduce strict measures
against copying in public examinations, whidh substantially d^rea^^^ their pass
percentages. It has ajso been observed that the resuhs in respect of,C ent^ Ifoards hke
CBSE, ICSB are almost uniform. It is the State Boards who experi^êid fl^ptuations in
the different years as a result of different policies of the State govîmiCTit from time to
time. Of the total 87.87 lakh students who appeared in 1991 Matriculation Examination;
71,86 lakh v(81,78%) appeêd as regular candidates.
7. High School Supplementary Exandihatiohs, the number of candidates was

10.30 lakh in 1989 but si^ficantly declined to 7.39 lakh in 1990 ^^t mcreased to 12.81
lakh in 1991 and tQ 14.21 lakh (io.93%) in \^^2. In U.P. Board, there is iw provision for
supplemental^ Exammations. Taidng all the Boards together the p^$ p ^ j^ U g e in High
School (Supplementary) Examinations wji^ 24.2 and 25.5, 28.95 and 26.63 during
1989,1990,1991 and 1992 respectively.
8. In Higher Secpnd^ Annual Examinations, mixed trends have been observed. In

1989, 21,37 19^1 students appeared in this examination and in 19^0, a similar number
(21.79 lakh students) appeared but the number of candidates appeared increased to 25.92
lakh in 1991 and further increased to 28.38 lakh in 1992. The pass percentages in Higher
Secondary Annual Examinations have been 47.06, 53.78, 55.38, 53.7, 57.71 and 57.^8
during the years 1987,1988,1989,1990,1991 and 1992 respectively.

9. Mixed trends have also been observed in Higher Secondary (Supplementary)
Examinations in the span of four years. 1.67 lakh students appeared in 1989
(Supplementary) Examinations which decreased to 1.55 lakh during 1990 and further
increased to 1.92 lakh in 1991 but again decrease % 1.89 lakh in 1992. The pass
percentages were 35.1, 23.5, 37.69 and 34.41 in these years respectively.
10. Regarding Intermediate/Pre-University Examinations, the number of candidates

appeared was 12.35 lakhs in 1989, which increased to 13.79 lakh in 1990, 14.02 lakh in
1991 but decreased to 13.87 lakhs in 1992. The p ^ s percentages were 47.3% in 1989,
which improved to 58.10% in 1991 but decreased tp 28.86% during 1992. The decrease
is due to the poor performance in the Examination conducted by Madhyamik Shiksha
Parishad, U.P. in 1992 where the pass percentage came down from 80.55% in 1991 to
just 30.38% in 1992 due to stringent measures taken by the State Government against
copying.
11. Out of the 25 school boards of Secondary Education as many as 11 (44%) have
not supplied the division-wise details of candidates who graduated from these boards.
12. In case of Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh^ Boards of School Education, the
percentage of candidates who qualified in third division is less as compared to those wlro
qualified in second division while in ease of repamning school boards this percentage is
more in third division.

13. The pass percentage in High School, Higher Secondary and Intermediate/Pre-
University examinations for all the Boards taken together for the years 1983 through
1992 has been given in the Sub-table 1 as under:

14. Table 4 shows the results of Supplementary High School Examination conducted
by various Boards in 1991. Here again the pass percentage varies between 15.75 of
Karnataka Board to 67.27 of Mizoram Board of School Education. The national average
of candidates passed was 28.95% (22,53% for boys and 28.16% for girls). Pass
percentage of boys was more than the national average in 8 Boards. Pass percentage for
boys was the highest in Mizoram (60.00%) and the lowest in Karnataka (14.34%).
15. Table 6 gives sex-wise particulars of Scheduled Castes candidates who appeared
and passed in High School (Aimual and Supplementary) Examination in 1991 conducted
by different Boards. Table! 7 indicates number of Scheduled Castes candidates appeared
and passed in annual and Supplementary Examination as a distribution by regular/private
candidates. The highest pass percentage among Scheduled jC^tes candidates in High
School examination was 81.92% (87.18% for boySj,|wc|o74.04% for girls) in ICSE
followed by 71.93% (71.37% for boys and 74.35% for, .girls) in Haryana and the lowest
viz. 19.23% in case of Board of Secondary Education, Kerala. Pass percentage for
Scheduled Castes candidates was 43.24% (40.18% for boys and 40.91% for girls).
Similar particulars are given in tables 8 and 9 for Scheduled Tribe c^didates, Regajr4ing
Scheduled Tribe candidates the highest pass percentage was iin case ICSB y^z. 82.83%
(85.25% for boys and 79.33% for girls) and the lowest wast 11.00% (1,1% bpys and
11% for girls) in respect of Kerala Board of School Education. P^s percentage for ST
students was 36.32% (36.43% for boys and36.06% for girls).
High School Examinations 1992 (Annual)
16. Table 26 depicts the results of High School (Annual) examinations conducted by
various Boards ini 992. The pass percentage for All India level was 44.09%. The highest
pass percentage was reported by Council for Indian School Certificate Examination
(90.70%) followed by Haryana Board of School Education (76.18%) and the lowest in
the case of Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, U.P. (14.7%) followed by Manipur Board of
Secondary Education On the basis of number of candidates appeared, U.P.
Board was the largest (15.70 lakh) followed by Maharashtra Board (11.66 lakh).
Results of High School, Higher Secondary & Intermediate/PUC Examinations, 1991 & 1992
Nagaland Board of School Education is the smallest. Sex-wise distribution of candidates
appeared shows that girls formed 30.64% of the total number appeared. At all India level
the pass percentage for girls was 47.69% i.e. hljgjier than for boys (36.24%).
High JSchool^âminatiQn 1992 (Supplementary)
17. Table 29 shows the results of High School (Supplementary) examination held in
1992. Pass percentage for different boards varies significantly. This percentage was
26.63 for all, (20.59% for boys and 26.04% for girls), iô n g
pass percentage was 73.03% for West Bengal followed by 61.63% in case of Mizoram
and the lowest was reported by Karnataka Secondary Education Board with 12.68%
(11.72% for boys and 15.11 for girls). Information on Supplementary Examination
results was not available in case of Boards of Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Tamil
Nadu, Tripura, CBSE and Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh.
18. Table 30 gives break up of candidates who appeared as regular and private
candidates and passed in High School (Supplementary) examination for different Boards

held in 1992. Seven Boards did not supply this information.
19. Table 31 shows the number of Scheduled Caste candidates appeêd and passed in
High School (Annual and Supplementary) examination in 1992 from diffi?rent Boards,
Total number of candidates belon^ng to Scheduled Castes appeared was, 8,7^,^^kh. The
pass percentage at national level was 25.94%. Table 32 gives the distribution of
Scheduled Caste candidates as regular and private and passed in H i^ School (Annual
and Supplementary) Examination 1992.
20. Table 33 shows the number of Scheduled Tribes candidates appeared and passed
in High School (Annual and Supplementary) Examinations in 1992. Among the Boards
the highest number (61,666) of candidates appeared in High School examination in
Madhya Pradêsh of whick 25.25% passed out followed by Board of Secondary
Education, Assam in which 50,614 appeared with pass percentage of 23.53%. Total
number of Scheduled Tribe candidates appeared was 2.88 lakh of which 27.35% passed.
Pass percentage for boys was 27.52 and for girls it was 27.65%, slightly higher than that
of boys. TTable 34 shows break-up of the Scheduled Tribe can^dates speared and

passed in High SdHool (Annual Supplementary) Examinations in 1992 as regular and

21. 25.92 lakh students appeared in Higher Secondary Examination in 1991
conducted by different Higher Secondary B6ards in the country. Pass percentage at All
India level was 57.71% (51.02% for boys and 58.99% for girls). Considering the size of
the Boards, the Maharashtra Board was largest one with 4.69 lakh students appeared
followed by West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Examination with 3.08 lakh
students appeared. Nagaland Bo£^d has rieported Nil candidates. Among all the 20
Boards, the pass percentage was the highest (97.79%) in case of Bihar Board followed by
ICSE (92.45%) and, Central Boa^d of Secondary Education, New Delhi ( 68.42%).
Lowest (29.85%) was in the H.P. Board of School Education. Table 10 gives the details
of candidates appeared and passed for all the Boards. Table 11 gives the break-up of
candidates who appeêd ^s regular/private candidates for Higher Secondary (Annual)
Examination for all the Boards. Table 12 gives the Division-wise break-up. 11 of the 20
Boards did not report Division-wise iiiformation on passed candidates in Higher
Secondary Examination, 1991.

22. Table 13 shows the number of candidates appeared and passed in Higher
Secondary Supplementary Examination conducted by different Boards in 1991. Of the
total 1.92 lakh students appeared in this Examination, Maharashtra Board alone
contributed 48.35% share. Total pass percentage for all Boards was 37.69% of
candidates appeared in Supplementary/ Higher Secondary Examination, 1991.
Higher Secondary Examination 1992 (Aimual)
23. Table 35 shows the examination results of Higher Secondary (Annual)
Examination held in 1992 for 20 Boards. 28.38 lakh candidates appeared in all, of which
57.88% passed. The pass perceiitage for boys was 48.61 and for girls 60.39% which is
higher than that for boys. The highest (95.98%) in the Council for Indian School
Certificate Examination, New Delhi and the lowest was 30.97% about council for Higher
Secondary Education, Orissa. Nine Boards reported the pass percentage higher than the
national average. Considering the total number of candidates speared, Maharashtra

Board reported the highest number (5.44 lakh) followed fey Bihar Sbliool Examination
Board (3.65 lakh) and smallest number viz. 1827 candidates from Mîpur Board of
Secondary Education. Table 36 shows breakriip of candidates appeared and passed in
Higher Secondary Examination as regular/private candidates: Table 37 shows division-
wise number of students appeared and qualified in Higher Stdcondary Examination 1992.

24. Table 38 gives the nuinber of candidates who appeared aiid passed in Higher' ^
Secondary (Supplementary) eXînation held in 1992 frbin diiferent Boards. Pass
percentage vanes from 14.24% iti case of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and' '
Higher Secondary Education to :88.21% in case of ICSB, New Delhi. >^t Ml India level

25. Table 40 and 41 give examination results data of Scheduled Castes candidate.
The pass percentage of Scheduled Caste candidates in Higher Second^ (Annual ^
Supplementary) examinations held in 1992 was 38.03% (37.6% for boys 39.88% for
girls). Table 42 and 43 give examination results data for Scheduled Tribes students. Six
BoarHk furnished data in this regard. The piaiss p^tcentage for S.T. candidates at national

iii) iSoard of Secondary Education, Madhya Pradesh,
iv) NEHU Controller of Examinations, Meghalaya,
v) Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh.
27. Table 19 shows the data for Intermediate/Pre-University examinations of four of
the above mentioned :ftfe Boards. Information from Miaiiliya Pradesh Board was ftdt
available. These four Boards taken together reported 14.02 lakh (10.23 lakh boys and
3.79 lakh girls) candidates rappeared. Of these Madhyamik; Shiksha Parishad, U.P. aloi^
contributed 56.87%. Combined pass percentage was 58.10% (56.26% for boys and

63.10% for girls). Break-up of candidates who appeared as regular/private candidate is

28. Table 22 shows the details of candidates appeared and passed in Intermediate/Pre-
University (Supplementary) examinations. There is ilo provision for Supplementary
Examination in Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, U.P. Details of Scheduled Caste and
Scheduled Tribe candidates appeared and passed in these examinations have been shown
in Table 23, 24 and 25.

29. Out of the five boards of the Intermediate/Pre-University Examinations, only four
submitted the information. 13.87 lakh candidates appeared in Intermediate/Pre-
University examination conducted by four Boards in 1992. Of these, Madhyamik
Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh alone formed 50.22%. Total number of candidates
passed from these four Boards taken together was 4.00 lakh. The pass percentage in
Intermediate/Pre-University Examination held in 1992 was 28.86% (23.49% for boys
and 41.86% for girls) at all India level. The pass percentage of girls was higher than that
of boys in all the Boards. Table 44 gives board-wise particulars of candidates appeared
and passed. Break-up of the candidates appeared and passed as regular and private is
given in table 45.
30. Table 46 shows particulars about candidates appeared and passed in
Intermediate/Pre-University (Supplementary) Examinations held in 1992. The
information is available for Boards of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
33. Tables 47 and 48 give particulars of candidates appeared and passed in
Intermediate/Pre-University (aimual & Supplementary) Examinations held in 1992 in
respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes respectively.
