Topic
Introduction to Creativity and
Innovation
What is creativity?
What does it mean to be creative?
Creativity….
The ability to make or otherwise bring into existence something new, whether a new
solution to a problem, a new method or device, or a new artistic object or form.

The English word "creativity" comes from the Latin terms creare (meaning 'to
create') and facere (meaning 'to make'). Its derivational suffixes also come from
Latin. The word "create" appeared in English as early as the 14th century—notably in
Chaucer's The Parson's Tale[4] to indicate divine creation.[5]
The modern meaning of creativity in reference to human creation did not emerge
until after the Enlightenment.
What is innovation?
Why is it important?
Innovation….
The practical implementation of ideas that result in the introduction of new goods or
services or improvement in offering goods or services.

It is important for solving various problems and lead to growth, efficiency and
improvement of the world.
How are creativity and
innovation related?
Creativity involves generating original and unique ideas, while innovation is about
implementing those ideas to create value.

Only with creative ideas can one truly innovate and implement solutions that work.
What are the types
of creativity?
Types of creativity
1. Deliberate cognitive creativity

2. Deliberate emotional creativity

3. Spontaneous cognitive creativity

4. Spontaneous emotional creativity

A. Deliberate cognitive creativity
Deliberate cognitive creativity is when we are focused and are consciously aware of
the process based on our prior knowledge.

Like the inventions of Edison, is a great example of a deliberate and cognitive

creator. His work involved doing experiments repeatedly, making tweaks as he did,
until something finally worked.
B. Deliberate emotional creativity
Deliberate emotional creativity is consciously influenced by our emotions.

For example, if a bad event just happened to you or a relative, you may reflect on
yourself trying to understand the decisions and incidents that led to this situation.
You’ll naturally use this type of creativity to reflect on the event so you can face it
and ultimately, be able to move on and learn from the situation.
C. Spontaneous cognitive creativity
Spontaneous cognitive creativity is an unconscious and unpredictable process, but still
requires prior knowledge.

Someone who falls into this category is said to require time to do something else,
allowing their subconscious to keep working on the problem. When explaining this
type of creative thinking, an example is how Isaac Newton thought of gravity while
watching a falling apple.
D. Spontaneous emotional creativity
Spontaneous emotional creativity is what usually occurs in artists and musicians.

Great artists and musicians such as Mozart, Baudelaire or even rap singers like
Eminem are often these types of creatives and experience powerful and emotional
(from the amygdala) creative moments that seem like an epiphany or even a
religious experience. It's more challenging to design these moments into our
regular lives, but a high level of skill is often required of the person.
In simple….
How to be creative?
We’ll see about that in detail in the next presentation
But here are some steps you can follow to get an Idea
1. Observe/Empathise/Research (observation of creativity in nature)
2. Understand/Analyse/Define (analysing creativity methods)
3. Ideate/Alternate/Create (trying creative alternatives)
4. Build/Prototype/Detail (making a presentation)
5. Evaluate/Reflect/Implement (feedback from others)
