NATURE AND FUNCTIONS

NATURAL SCIENCE
SOCIAL SCIENCE

HUMANITIES
Natural Sciences
Natural science deals with the
natural world. It is concerned with
the phenomena and objects of
nature and the physical world.
Natural science involves
comprehension, description, and
prediction of natural phenomena
using empirical and observational
evidence.
Function of
Natural Sciences

The natural sciences

employ scientific
methods to explain
natural phenomena,
relying on quantitative
data (Ledoux, 2002, p.
34)
Scientific
Method

The scientific method

is a systematic
process that uses
standardized practices
for generating and
analyzing empirical
evidence and
explanations of
natural phenomena.

Social Sciences
Social science is the study of
systematic study of various aspects
of human society.
Social Science has come to mean a
pattern of activities of a group of
people within a society and thus a
good source of information about
the structures of their lives,
worldview and individual decisions
and struggles. (Tatel Jr. 2016)

Humanities
Humanities are academic disciplines that study
aspects of human society and culture. They
study and analyzes the flaws in humankind and
how they can be improved.
These cultural aspects include speech,
knowledge, beliefs, arts, technologies, ideals,
and rules. With a focus on these aspects, it
examines and prescribes the type of behavior
considered appropriate to an individual in his
or her efforts to achieve the status of being a
cultured human being.

ANTHROPOLOGY
Etymology: “anthropos” means human and
“logos” means study of

Anthropology is the study of ancient societies

and their cultural traditions. (Dela Cruz, 2016)

Anthropology deals with the nature of human

beings, both from a biological and cultural point
of view. (Tatel, Jr. 2016)
34

ANTHROPOLOGY
Two broad fields of anthropology:
1. Physical or biological anthropology studies the biological
evolution of man
2. Cultural anthropology investigates and seeks to understand
the cultural features of societies.
It is divided into three sub-branches:
1. Archaeology seeks to reconstruct the past life of ancient
societies. E.g. using fossil remains of human culture
2. Anthropological linguistics involves the study of
language in societies or communities where language may
or not be written
3. Ethnology uses data gathered through observations and
interviews with living people. E.g. marriage customs,
kinship patterns, economic systems and religious rites of
cultural groups and compare it with the life of
contemporary societies.

ECONOMICS
Economics is the study of the efficient allocation of scarce
resources in order to satisfy unlimited human wants and needs.
Greek words: “oikos” means home and “nomos” means
management
Economics is classified into two scopes:
a. Macroeconomics examines the behavior of entire economies
(Pennington, 1999 p.3). It tackles about the aggregates or total
values that describe the whole economy. E.g. GDP or Gross
Domestic Product which measures the total market value of
goods and services that a country produces in one year.
b. Microeconomics is the study of the choices made by
economic actors such as households, companies and
individual markets.
37
ECONOMICS
Factors of production:
1. Land is anything that comes from nature and which
gives life support to all living creatures. (clean air, timber
(wood) resources, and water)
2. Labor refers to any human effort exerted during the
production process which includes physical exertion,
application of skills or talent or exercise intellectual skills.
3. Capital refers to anything that be used to create or
manufacture goods and services. E.g. capital goods are
building, infrastructure, machines and other tools used in
production process
4. Entrepreneurship is the ability to organize all the other
factors of production in order to carry out effectively the
production process

GEOGRAPHY
Geography insists that its environment or the location of
the people– a condition that exists outside of people–
the ultimately conditions the way people behave in
society. (Tatel, Jr. 2016)
It comes from the two Greek words “geo” means Earth
and “graphein” means description
There are two main branches: physical and human.
Physical geography studies the natural features of the
earth, like climate, water, vegetation and soil.
Human geography studies human population and the
impact of activities on the planet.

Eratosthenes is the Father of Geography.

LINGUISTICS
Linguistics is a product of human race’s biological
and cultural heritage is an invention by people yet
they themselves are shaped by it. (Tatel, Jr. 2016)
Etymology: “lingua” (tongue, language)
Linguistics studies the nature of language, grammar
and the process of language acquisition.

HISTORY
History is traditionally regarded as the study of the recorded
past. It comes the Greek noon utopia means learning or “histoire”
means recorded or undocumented events.
There are two types of historical sources:
1. Primary source is a testimony of an eyewitness or an
account of someone who has firsthand information on the
subject. It does not have to an original source. It can be
rewritten, recopied or a translated version of the original.
(e.g. transcripts, journal entries, video interviews,
monuments, photographs, statistics and official government
record.
2. Secondary source is a testimony or an account of someone
who is not an eyewitness to the event being narrated
(biographies, textbooks, conference proceedings, book
reviews)

analysis. Demographic processes such as birth
migration and aging are investigated because they
impact on how society changes across a period
time.(Tatel, Jr. 2016)
It comes from the Greek words “demos” means
