Answer- Punched cards were used to feed data into first generation computers.
2. What are vacuum tubes?
Answer- Thousands of vacuum were used to control and amplify the signals.

Answer- Two characteristics of the second generation of computers –
1. Transistors were used.
2. Computers were smaller in size.

Answer- Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce invented Integrated circuits.

1. They have magnetic disks with higher capacity.
2. They became compact, reliable, cheaper, affordable and more powerful.

1. What do you understand by the term ‘generation’?
Answer – The term generation refers to a step in technology. In other words, generations
provide a framework for the computer industry to distinguish between various technologies.
2. Describe any four characteristics of third generation computers.
Answer- Four characteristics of third generation of computers –
1. Integrated circuits (ICs) were used.
2. Computers were smaller in size and less expensive.
3. High level languages (FORTRAN-II, COBOL, PASCAL etc.) were used.
4. Monitors and keyboards were introduced for input and output of data.
3. What is AI?
Answer –A technology that enables a machine to think and take decisions like human beings.
Example: Robots, Facial recognition system, Language translator etc.
4. Distinguish between first generation and second generation of computers.
Answer- Distinguish between first generation and second generation computers –
First generation computers-
1. Vacuum tubes were used.
2. Huge in size.
3. Punched cards were used to feed data into these computers.
4. Machine language was used.
Second generation computers-
1. Transistors were used.
2. Smaller in size.
3. Punched cards and tapes were used to feed data into these computers.
4. Assembly language was used.

1. What is Software?
Answer – The sets of instructions that govern the operation of a computer system and make
the hardware run is called software.

1. What is a Window?
Answer- A separate viewing area that displays its contents.
2. What are the windows control buttons?
Answer- Maximize, Minimize, Close.
3. What is a file or folder?
Answer- File – A file is an object that contains data or information.
Folder – A folder is a system container that can hold files, application and other folders on
the computer.
4. How do you cascade windows?
Answer- Right-click the taskbar ->A context menu will appear -> Click Cascade windows
option -> All the open windows on your desktop will be cascaded.
5. If multiple windows are opened, what would you do to view the desktop completely?
Answer- Right-click taskbar -> Click show the desktop option.
6. How do you rename a file?
Answer- Open File Explorer -> Locate your file ->select Home Tab -> Click Rename option.

1. Describe the File Explorer. How do you create a folder using the File Explorer? Write
steps.
Answer- File Explorer- It is a tool that allows you to create and manage files and folders on
the computer.
Steps to create a file using File Explorer are:
a. Open File Explorer and click on the drive or folder where you want to create a new file.
b. Select Home tab.
c. Click the New Folder option. A new folder appears.
d. Type in new name for created folder.
2. What is the Recycle bin? How do you move files or folders to the recycle bin?
Answer- Recycle Bin is a folder or directory where deleted items are temporarily stored. The
files or folders moved to the Recycle Bin can be recovered. If files or folder are deleted from
Recycle Bin, then these cannot be recovered.
Steps to move files or folder to Recycle Bin are:
1. Select the file in File Explorer window.
2. Click the Delete option in Home tab. Selected items will be moved to the Recycle Bin.
3. Write the steps to move a folder from D: drive to E: drive.
Answer- Steps to move a folder from D: drive to E: drive-
1. Open File Explorer.
2. Locate and select folder which you want to move from D: drive.
3. Click the ‘Move to’ option in Home tab.
4. Click on choose location option from the drop-down menu.
5. ‘Move Items’ dialog box appears. Choose a new location where selected items are to be
moved.
6. Click Move button. The selected files or folder will be moved.
