MATH 500-0001 Midterm Exam 1

Fall 2024

Instructions
A. This exam is closed-book; no calculators are allowed. The total time allowed is 1 hour
and 20 minutes.
B. This test consists of five true-or-false questions and six partial credit questions. Please
select and solve five out of the six partial credit questions. Each true-or-false question
is worth 2 points and each one of the five selected partial credit questions is worth 10
points. The total score of this exam is 60 points.
C. You are allowed to use one page of self-prepared handwritten notes during this exam.
The page should be of A4 (or letter) size, and you can prepare your handwritten notes
on both sides of the paper.
D. Please answer the questions in the spaces provided on the exam sheets. Your exam
will be scanned, so please write your work in a neat and concise fashion and make
good use of the space.
E. Please only submit your solutions to the five true-or-false questions and five partial
credit questions of your choice. If you submit the solutions to all six partial credit
questions, they will be graded based on the order of page number, and only the first
five will be graded and counted toward your exam score.

(a) U = {(ω2 , ω2 , →ω2 )|ω ↑ R} ↓ R3 is closed under vector addition but
not closed under scalar multiplication, hence U is not a subspace.
(b) Z is closed under multiplication, has 1 as the multiplicative identity,
but does not include inverse elements for integers whose absolute values are greater
than 1, hence (Z, ·) is not a group.
