Unit 5 Test Review

TIP: You MAY use notes and the periodic table on your test. You may NOT use the book or
other internet resources. Your study guide will be collected for a portfolio score at the end of the
unit.

1. Describe Newton’s Three Laws

a. Law 1:
Every object will stay the same unless some external force changes it
b. Law 2:
The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the net
force acting upon the object
c. Law 3:
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
2. What is the difference between a chemical and a physical change?
Physical change changes the physical aspect of the material but not the material
while chemical change changes what material it is.

3. Define the following:

a. Acceleration:
The change of velocity.
b. Momentum:
Mass in Motion
c. Inertia:
The tendency to do nothing or remain unchanged
d. Mass:
A body of matter with no definite shape
e. Force:
Strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement

Part II
1. In T-ball, batters hit a ball that is placed on a T-shaped stand. Batter A hits the
ball by swinging the bat from a resting position on his shoulder. Batter B hits the
ball with the bat directly behind it. In one or two sentences, create and justify a
claim about which batter will likely hit the ball the greater distance.
Batter B will hit the ball with more force because the bat is behind Batter B
allowing for more time to build up momentum therefore more force so the ball
would go a greater distance

2. Use the image to answer the question.

Students are using the experimental setup shown in the image in which the two
ends of a string are attached to a car and to a hanger. The students conducted
three trials in which they placed metal discs on the hanger to manipulate the
force applied to the car. As a result, the car accelerates along the table while two
probes collect motion data.

On the fourth trial of this experiment, a student placed some discs on the car by
mistake. In 1-2 sentences, explain how this mistake will affect the graphs
produced by the computer.

3. Use the simulation to complete the activity.

Force and Motion Basics (select Acceleration)

In one or two sentences, make a hypothesis about whether or not it is easier to

start the box moving than to keep it moving on a rough surface. Then, explain
how the simulation can be used to prove the hypothesis
I hypothesize that the car would be harder to move and need more force to move
The simulation proved my hypothesis correct because when I added more weight
the box moved slower and needed more force to move at the same speed it was
before.

4. A musician hits a drum with a drumstick. In three to four sentences, explain the
collision forces between the drum and drumstick.
Hitting the drum makes the drum deform, absorbing the impact energy the
drumstick hit it with, making it vibrate rapidly, producing sound waves in the air.
As the drumhead vibrates, it pushes the drumstick away, allowing it to bounce
back.
