SSS 1 COMPUTER STUDIES

INPUT DEVICES

Input refers to the data or instruction given to the computer for processing.

Input devices are devices through which data from outside the computer is communicated to the computer.
They are used to enter data or give instructions to the computer.

EXAMPLES & FUNCTIONS OF INPUT DEVICES

1. Keyboard: To type in data and give instruction into the computer


2. Mouse: To give commands to the computer and control the movement of the cursor
3. Joystick: Used to control and move objects on a gaming console or computer screen
4. Light pen: Uses a light sensitive detector to select objects or draw pictures on the screen. It is similar to a
pen or stylus
5. Scanner: Used to input printed text and pictures on paper into the computer for further processing.
6. Microphone: Used to input voice data (sound) which is then stored in digital form
7. Touchscreen: A computer screen designed to respond to a touch on its surface
8. Digital camera: Used to input both motion and still images.
9. Barcode reader: Reads and decodes barcodes into letters and/or numbers
10. QR Code reader: Reads and interprets information from a QR (quick response) code.
11. Graphics Tablet (Digitizer): Uses a pressure-sensitive pad to detect and capture hand-drawn images,
animations, maps, signatures, engineering drawings, etc.
12. Magnetic ink character reader [MICR]: To read information on cheques and other documents to verify
their legitimacy
13. Optical character reader [OCR]: To convert images of printed text into an editable text
14. Optical mark reader [OMR]: To identify and read markings on a paper
15. Touchpad: A pressure-sensitive pointing device over which a user slides fingertip to move the pointer on
the screen.
16. Trackball: A stationary device with a moveable ball that is rotated to move the pointer on the screen. It is
used to send commands to computer.
