THE MOUSE
The mouse is a small palm-sized pointing device designed like a rat that is used to control the movement of a
pointer/cursor in a graphical user interface (GUI) environment.
The mouse has two buttons called the left and right buttons and a wheel for scrolling between the buttons.
The left button is used to perform most basic mouse operations while the right button is used to open up
menus. The ball or light at the base senses the movement of the mouse and sends corresponding signals to
the CPU when the mouse buttons are pressed.
TYPES OF MICE
1. Mechanical Mouse: It features a rubber ball at the bottom that could roll in all directions and track
movement. The ball rotates as the mouse is rolled over a flat surface. Usually, a rectangular rubber pad
(known as mouse pad) is used as flat surface. As the mouse is moved over the flat surface with the ball
rolling correspondingly, the pointer moves in the same direction on the screen. However, one has to
constantly clean the rollers to reduce friction.
2. Optical Mouse: Uses light emitting diode (LED) and photo technology to detect pointer movement relative
to the underlying surface.
3. Laser Mouse: Uses an infrared laser technology to detect mouse movement
4. A mouse can also be wired i.e. connected to the computer using a cord with PS/2 or USB connectors or
cordless/wireless without a cable connection.
