INTRODUCTION
⚫ A computer network or simply a
network is a collection of computers
and other hardware components
interconnected by communication
channels that allow sharing of
resources and information.

Meaning and Definition
⚫ A Network can be defined as a group of
computers and other devices connected
in some ways so as to be able to
exchange the data.
⚫ “A combination of computer hardware,
cabling, network devices, and computer
software used together to allow
computers to communicate with each
other”.
⚫ The computers on a network may be
linked through cables, telephone lines,
radio waves, satellites or infrared rays
Need of Networking
⚫ File sharing: Networking of computers
helps the network users to share data
files.
⚫ Hardware sharing: Users can share
devices such as printers, scanners, CD-
ROM drives, hard drives, etc. Without
computer networks, device sharing is not
possible.
⚫ Application sharing: Applications can be
shared over the network, and this allows
implementing client/server applications.

will be used by many individuals and
organizations.
