RAINFALL
• Rainfall is measured with an instrument called a Rain Gauge.

• A centimetre of rainfall is the amount of water that would cover the ground to a depth of
one centimetre, provided none evaporated, drained off or percolated.

• The daily records of rainfall are added at the end of the month to find the total rainfall for
that month.

• The total for each month is added at the end of the year to find the annual rainfall.

• Rainfall can be graphically depicted with a bar graph, one bar for each month of the year.
TEMPERATURE
• Temperature is measured with a maximum and minimum
thermometer. Shade temperatures must be recorded, not
temperatures in direct sunlight.
• A maximum thermometer records the highest temperature
reached during a 24 hr. period i.e. the maximum temperature.
• A minimum thermometer records the lowest temperature
reached during a 24 hr. period i.e. the minimum temperature.
Annual Range of Temperature
• The difference between the highest and lowest temperatures
of a year gives the annual range of temperature.
• The difference between the average monthly temperatures of
the hottest month and the coldest month of the year gives the
annual range of temperature.
