Abstract:

The primary focus of the lab was to provide a thorough introduction to basic logic gates:
AND, OR and NOT. The function of these gates and significant application in electronics for
designing basic logic gates. IC models of these gates were used to implement the basic
logical circuit, assigned as lab tasks.

Apparatus:

A listing of all required equipment is provided below:

1. Trainer board
2. Jumper wires
3. IC 74LS08 (AND), IC 74LS32 (OR) and IC 74LS04 (NOT)

Preliminary of logical ICs:

➢ 74LS32(OR IC):

In digital circuits, the logical OR operation is obtained by employing the IC 74LS32, a quad
2-input OR gate integrated circuit. It has four independent OR gates, each with two outputs.
The output of the OR gate is HIGH when either of its inputs is HIGH. If all inputs are low, It
will produce LOW.

➢ 74LS08(AND IC):

In digital circuits, the logical AND operations is obtained by employing the IC 74LS08 , a
quad 2-input AND gate integrated circuit. It has four independent AND gates, each with two
components. The output of the AND gate is only HIGH when Its inputs are both HIGH. If
there is a low input, the It will produce LOW.

➢ 74LS04(NOT IC):

Digital circuits employ the IC 74LS04, a hex inverter IC with six independents NOT gates, to
invert input signals. There is only one input and one output for the NOT gate. Its job is to flip
the input signal, converting a logic HIGH to a logic LOW and back again.

Task 1:

Procedure:

➢ Have the required equipment, implement the IC on the trainer board by connecting the
IC to power supply using connecting wires. Power supply used in this case was fixed
5V supply.
➢ The U-shaped feature on chip indicates
the top position with the Vcc on the 14th
pin and ground on the 7th pin.
➢ Input two signals from the trainer board
to the IC chip, by using the data sheet to
locate the input and output pins.
➢ The U-shaped feature on chip indicates
the top position with the Vcc on the 14th
pin and ground on the 7th pin.
➢ Take output and insert it to the LED data display, to demonstrate the AND operation.

Simulation on Proteus:

To obtain an identical circuit on Proteus as shown in Fig 7, we follow the steps given below:

➢ For the input, we use a simple logic toggle which gives us a 0 or 1 with the tap of a
button.
➢ As for the gates, search for the IC number in the components window to get each gate
corresponding to its IC number.
➢ Finally, we use a simple LED with a ground connected to the other end in each
circuit.

3
➢ These circuits will verify the values given in Fig 6 in the truth tables.

Task 2:

Procedure:

➢ Implement the both the ICs 74LS32 and IC

74LS08 on the trainer board as illustrated in
task 1.
➢ By using the data sheets of ICs 74LS32 and IC
74LS08 make the connections of power supply
and input and outputs.
➢ Take three input switches and use two as input
to IC 74LS08.

4
➢ The output of IC 74LS08 and the third signal plugged in as input to the 74LS32.
➢ Observe the output signal on the LED display and match result with theoretical
calculation.

Simulation on proteus:

➢ Logic toggles are used as input, and an LED with a ground connection is used as the
output.
➢ The circuit similar to Fig. 8 uses an AND and OR gate to provide the desired output,
which Table 1 confirms.

Trainer board implementation in lab:

5
Conclusion:

The purpose of gaining fundamental understanding of the AND, OR and NOT gates
as fulfilled in the following lab. Given tasks for the implementation of the required
logical circuits was caried out on trainer boards and eventually simulated on
PROTEUS.
