(iii) If I take two-third of a number and add 4 to it, I get 18

(iv) When I subtracted 9 from thrice a number, the result was 15.

(v) Aryan subtracts four times the number of note books he has from 60, he finds the result to be 24

(vi) Roy thinks of a number and adds 10 to it. Now he divides the sum by 7 and gets 5 as an answer

(vii) Tarun thinks of a number. If he takes away 4 from 2 of the number, the result is 14
5
(i) let the number be x

5 times the number is 5x

Adding 2 to it gives 32

So, 5x + 2 = 32

∴ 5x = 32 – 2 (Transposing 2 to R.H.S.)

∴ 5x = 30

∴ 5x = 30 (Divide both sides by 5)

5 5
∴x=6

(ii) Let the number be x. One-third of the number is x/3 if we subtract 3 from x/3 we get 8. x –3 = 8
3
x = 8 + 3 (Transposing –3 to R.H.S.)
3
∴ x =11
3
∴ x = 3 × 11 = 33

(iii) Let the number be x

two-third of the number is 2 x

3
2
If we add 4 to x we get 18
3
2 x + 4 = 18
3

∴ 2 x = 18 – 4 (Transposing 4 to R.H.S.)
3
∴ 2 x =14
3

∴ 2 x × 3 = 14 × 3 (Multiply both sides by 3)

3
∴ 2x = 42

∴ 2x = 42 (Divide both sides by 2)

2 2
∴ x =21

(iv) Let the number be x

Thrice of the number is 3x

9 subtracted from 3x gives 15

3x – 9 = 15

∴ 3x = 15 + 9 (Transposing –9 to R.H.S.)

∴ 3x = 24

∴ 3x = 24 (Divide both sides by 3)

3 3
∴x=8

(v) Let the number of notebook Aryan has be x.

four times the note books is 4x

subtracting 4x from 60 gives 24

60 – 4x = 24

Transposing 60 to R.H.S.

     –4x = 24 – 60

   ∴ –4x = –36

∴ –4x = –36 (Divide both sides by –4).

–4 –4
x=9

(vi) Let the number be x.

Adding 10 to it gives x + 10

Now dividing x + 10 by 7 gives 5.

∴ x + 10 = 5
7

∴ x + 10 × 7 = 5 × 7 (Multiply both sides by 7)

7
∴ x + 10 = 35

∴ x = 35 – 10 (Transmission 10 to R.H.S.)

∴ x = 25

x = 45

2. Solve the following:

(i) The teacher tells the class that the highest marks obtained by a student in her class is thrice the lowest

mark minus 5. The highest score is 82. What is the lowest score?

Let the lowest score be x.

Highest score is three times lowest score minus 5

3x – 5

Also, Highest score is 82 i.e. 3x−5 = 82

∴ 3x = 82 + 5 (Transposing 5 to R.H.S.)

3x = 87

Dividing both sides by 3

3x = 87
3 3
∴ x = 29

So, the lowest score is 29.

(ii) In an isosceles triangle, the base angles are equal. The vertex angle is 60°. What are the base angles of

the triangle? (Remember, the sum of three angles of a triangle is 180°.)

Since the base angle of the Isosceles triangle be x.

Since base angles are equal therefore both are x.

If vertex angle is 60 and we know that sum of angles of a triangle is 180°.

Class-VII 96
69

TKA_MATH_WB_G7_CH04_ANS-ANNO.indd 69 14/9/2019 11:58:06 AM

∴ Equation becomes base angle (1) + base angle (2) + Vertex angle = 180.

x + x + 60 = 180

2x + 60 = 180

Transposing 60 to R.H.S.

2x = 180 – 60

∴ 2x = 120

2x = 120 (Divide both sides by 2)

2 2
x = 60

∴ Base angle of the triangle is 60. Moreover, this triangle will be equilateral triangle.

(iii) Virat scored thrice as many runs as Rishabh. Together, their runs fell four runs short of a double century.

How many runs did each one score?

Let number of runs scored by Rishabh be x Virat scored thrice the runs scored by Rishabh = 3x

∴ Total runs scored by 2 players = x + 3x. Given total was 4 runs short of a double century which is

200 – 4.

4x = 200 – 4 (Transposing 4 to R.H.S.)

∴ 4x = 196

Divide both sides by 4.

4x = 196

4 4
∴ x = 49

Rishabh scored x = 49 runs

Virat Scored 3x = 147 runs

3. Solve the following:

(i) Kartik says that he has 5 chocolates more than four times the chocolates Anup has. Kartik has 57

chocolates. How many chocolates does Anup have?

Let Anup has x Chocolates, Kartik has 5 more than four times Anup has.

So, 4x + 5

Also, Kartik has 57 Chocolates

∴ 4x + 5 = 57

∴ 4x = 57 – 5 (Transposing 5 to R.H.S.)

70
70 Class-VII

∴ 4x = 52

Divide both sides by 4

4x/4 = 52/4

∴ x = 13

So, Anup has 13 Chocolates

(ii) Viraj’s father is 52 years old. He is 2 years older than five times Viraj’s age. What is Viraj’s age?

Let Viraj be x years old

∴ 5 times his age = 5x

Viraj’s father is 2 years older than 5x.

He is 52 years old

Equation becomes 5x + 2 = 52

∴ 5x = 52 – 2 (Transposing 2 to R.H.S.)

∴ 5x = 50

Divide both sides by 5

5x = 50

5 5
∴ x = 10 years

∴ Viraj is 10 years old.

(iii) A farmer planted trees in his field. Some of the trees were fruit trees. The number of non-fruit trees were

three more than two times the number of fruit trees. What was the number of fruit trees planted if the

number of non-fruit trees planted was 45?

Let us assume number of fruit trees planted are x.

∴ 2 times total fruit tree = 2x

Number of non-fruit trees are 3 more than 2x

∴ 2x + 3 = 45

Transposing 3 to R.H.S.,

2x = 45 – 3

∴ 2x = 42

Divide both sides by 2.

2x = 42    ∴ x = 21    ∴ Total number of fruit trees planted are 21.
