Hi everyone! I am Georgiana, founder
of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help
you speak English fluently.

In today's lesson, I'll talk about makeup. I've decided

to introduce some basic vocabulary related to
makeup products. So if you want to enrich your
English vocabulary, I suggest that you continue
listening.

Make sure you don't miss the mini-story. It will help

you improve your English speaking, and you will have
a great time.

Remember! You can get the transcript

at speakenglishpodcast.com.

Ok, let's start!

Let's see what beauty products we need for a basic

look.

Most women want to be ready in 5 minutes and

depending on the time that I have, or the occasion, I
spend between 5 and 30 minutes doing my makeup.

If you are a makeup lover, you know that there are

countless makeup products. So, remember that in
this episode, I will focus on the basics.

Ok, so, what's the first step?

Before I start, I'd like to mention some essential points

like, how do we apply makeup?
What makeup tools do we need for that?

There are so many options, but don't worry; I promise

to keep it simple.

There are at least two makeup tools that you need to

have in your collection: makeup brushes, and at least
one makeup sponge, (also called a blender.)

Depending on the product you want to apply, you'll

choose the right makeup tool.

Just keep in mind that many of the beauty items
that I will mention come in a variety of textures. The
most common ones are powder, liquid, cream, and
gel.

So, let's start our makeup routine. Remember, you

only have 5 minutes!

The foundation, as its name indicates, is where we

apply the rest of the beauty products. It's a makeup
product very similar to a cream, except that it should
have the same color as your skin. We apply it all over
the face or only on the spots where we choose to
hide imperfections.

Concealer is a very similar product, but we use it to

hide the dark circles under the eyes that make us
look tired.

After applying foundation, we need to add some

products on the cheeks:

Bronzer is a product that gives the impression that

we've been in the sun the whole weekend. I would
say that nowadays, it's the most loved makeup
product together with the highlighter.

Wait a minute!
What’s a highlighter?
It’s a cosmetic product that reflects light. It gives a
youthful glow to the face and body.

Another thing that I like to apply is blush. This beauty

product adds redness to the cheeks. It comes in a
variety of colors like pink, peach, red, that imitate a
natural flush.

After applying all this makeup, we'll add some face

powder to set the makeup and make it last longer.

Ok, let's hurry up and continue.

I start by defining my eyebrows. I usually use

an eyebrow pencil. It's just like an ordinary pencil but
with a creamier texture.

Then I apply eyeshadow. I apply it on the eyelids and
under the eyes. Eyeshadow usually comes in powder,
cream, or pencil form. And I prefer to use it in powder.
We use eyeshadow to make the eyes stand out or
look just more attractive.

Many women apply eyeliner, but I usually skip this

step. So, what' an eyeliner?
It's normally a pencil, that we draw above upper
lashes or below lower lashes or even both. Just like
the eyeshadow, we use an eyeliner to enhance or
also change the eye's shape.

Let’s not forget about mascara.

What's that?
Well, we use this product for the eyelashes. It usually
comes in black and makes the eyelashes look longer
and more voluminous.

How about the lips?

The most popular products for lips are lipstick,
lipgloss, and lip balm.

Let me explain the differences.

Lipstick comes in a solid stick, and it usually lasts a

long time on the lips. It comes in different textures
and almost an infinite range of colors, although I
prefer red or a nude shade, depending on the
occasion.

Lip gloss on the other hand, provides a glossy finish

to the lips and sometimes color. It doesn't last as
much as the lipstick, but it's easier to apply, so I tend
to use it more often.

And finally, the lip balm, which like the lipstick,

usually comes in a bar or a small pot, and hydrates
and nourishes the lips. Sometimes it adds a hint of
color.

Congratulations! Your 5-minute makeup routine is

over!

So, far so good?

Ok, let's continue with a mini-story.

Mini-Story
(Improve your Speaking)

What’s a mini-story?

A mini-story is very simple. I give you information

using phrases, and then I ask you questions.

After each question, there will be some seconds of

silence: it's your turn to answer the question!

Just try to give an easy and short answer.

After you answer, I'll give you the correct answer.

And just like that, I'll tell a story with questions and
answers.

Are you ready?

Steve applied for a job as a professional makeup artist

last year.

Steve applied for an architect's position?

told Steve that instead of working as an architect, he
would end up becoming a professional make-up
artist?

Perfect! It’s the end of this mini-story. And as you can

see, through questions and answers, you can practice
and improve your speech just like in a real
conversation.
