1. Show that the following vectors are linearly independent (1, 2, -1), (2, 2, 1) (1, -2, 3).
2. If the vectors u , v, w are linearly independent. Show that the vectors u  v, u  v, u  2v  w
are also linearly independent.
3. Define vector space with an example. Prove that R 2 is a vector space over R, where R is the
set of real numbers.
4. Show that the set 𝑊 = {(𝑎, 𝑏, 0): 𝑎, 𝑏 ∈ ℝ } is a subspace of the vector space ℝ3 (ℝ).
5. Prove that intersection any number of subspaces of a vector space V is a subspace of V.
6. Show that union of two subspaces is a subspace if and only if one is contained in other.
7. Define Basis, and Show that the vectors u1  (1,1,1), u2  (1, 2,3), u3  (1,5,8) span

f ( x, y )  ( x  3, 2 y, x  y )
11. Let f : R 2  R 2 be the linear mapping for which f (1, 2)  (2,3) and f (0,1)  (1, 4) . Find a
