1 for Age Word Problem

1 for Mixture Problem
1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

 Age Word Problem

Bryan is 20 years older than James. in 2 years, he will twice as old as James. How old are they now?

Bryan James

Present X+20 X

Future X+20+2 X+2

J = 2J

X+22= 2(x+2)

X+22= 2x + 4

22-4 = 2x-x

18=x

Let's solve it:

1. Let James' current age be B and Bryan's current age be J

2. Since Bryan is 20 years older than James: B = J + 20.

3. In 2 years, Bryan's age will be B + 2 and James' age will be J

+ 2.

4. In 2 years, Bryan will be twice as old as James: B + 2 = 2(J +

2).

Substitute B from step 2 into the equation in step 4:

(J + 20) + 2 = 2(J + 2)

J + 22 = 2J + 4
22 = J + 4 (subtract J from both sides)

18 = J (subtract 4 from both sides)

So, James is currently 18 years old.

Now, find Bryan's current age:

B = J + 20

B = 18 + 20

B = 38

Therefore, James is currently 18 years old,

and Bryan is currently 38 years old.

 Mixture Problems

You have a 5 liters of a 30% alcohol solution. How many liters of pure alcohol must be added to make
70% alcohol solution?

X + 1.5 = 0.70(x + 5)

X + 1.5 = 0.70x + 3.5

1.5 - 3.5 = 0.70x

2 = 0.70x

0.30x = 2

X = 6.67

Let's solve it:

Initial solution:

- Total volume = 5 liters

- Alcohol percentage = 30%

- Alcohol volume = 5 liters x 30% = 1.5 liters (pure alcohol)

- Water volume = 5 liters - 1.5 liters = 3.5 liters

Final solution:

- Total volume = 5 liters + x liters

- Alcohol percentage = 70%

- Alcohol volume = (5 + x) liters x 70%

1.5 liters (initial) + x liters (added) = (5 + x) x 0.7

Equating the two expressions:

x+1.5= 0.70x +3.5

0.3x = 2

x = 2/0.3

x = 6.67 liters (approximately)

So, approximately 6.67 liters of pure alcohol

must be added to make a 70% alcohol solution.

 Distance, Rate and Time Problem

The two bikers starts from the opposite ends of 100 miles course towards each other.
One biker travel at a rate of 50km/h, and the other biker travels at 44km/h. After how
long will the bikers meet?

B1 50km/h = 31.07 Miles/h

B2 44km/hb= 27.34 miles/h

= 58.41miles/h

Time = Distance / Combined speed

= 100 miles / 58.41 miles/h

≈ 1.71 hours or 1 hour and 43 minutes

Let's solve it:

Convert speeds from km/h to miles/h:

50 km/h ≈ 31.07 miles/h (Biker 1)

44 km/h ≈ 27.34 miles/h (Biker 2)

Combined speed = 31.07 + 27.34 = 58.41 miles/h

Time = Distance / Combined speed

= 100 miles / 58.41 miles/h

≈ 1.71 hours

Therefore, the bikers will meet approximately 1 hour and 43

minutes after starting.

To find the meeting point:

Distance traveled by Biker 1 = 31.07 miles/h x 1.71 h ≈ 53.14

miles

Distance traveled by Biker 2 = 27.34 miles/h x 1.71 h ≈ 46.86

miles

The bikers meet approximately 53.14 miles from Biker 1's

starting point or 46.86 miles from Biker 2's starting point.

1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: First I understand carefully each problems and determine their category it's either about age,
mixture or distance, rate and time then define their variables and stablish relationship among them and
introduce constraints or condition and create equation.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: By following the formula that based on example on the video that I watch and rechecking it, I
assured that my constructed problems are accurately represented on each topic.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon constructing the problem?

Answer: it's kindly difficult especially on me who doesn't like numbers.
