AP Chemistry
Summer Homework Self-Assessment Chapter 1

The Study of Chemistry

1. Do chemical properties of a substance reflect the kinds of atoms present, the way in which the atoms are
organized (structure) or both? Explain and provide examples.

Classifications of Matter

2. What is the difference between a compound and a mixture? (tricky question)

Properties of Matter

3. For each of the following properties of matter, write “I” if it is an intensive property and “E” if it is an
extensive property.

a. Mass ________

b. Color ________

c. Density _________

d. Flammability _______

e. Volume _________

4. How does a chemical change differ from a physical change?

5. Separation methods take advantage of the fact that the various substances in a mixture have different
physical properties. If for instance, two substances have different boiling points, distillation can be used
to separate the substances. The mixture is heated until one of the substances boils and its vapor can be
collected. The substance with the higher boiling point will still be in the non-vapor phase so a separation
has been achieved.

a. Give an example of a mixture that could be separated using filtration. Why do you think
filtration works?

b. Give an example of a mixture that could be separated using chromatography. Why do you think
chromatography works?

Units of Measurement

6. List the SI units of:

a. mass
b. temperature
c. volume
d. time
e. amount of a substance

7. In a chemistry lab, what are the most commonly used units of:

a. mass
b. temperature
c. volume

8. There are exactly 1 x 10-9 meters in a nanometer. How many nanometers are in a meter?
Uncertainty in Measurement
9. How many significant digits are in each of the following measured amounts?

a. 2000 ml __________
b. 0.0070 grams ________
c. 10.00 0C __________

10. State the rule for reporting additions and subtractions to the correct number of significant figures.

11. State the rule for reporting multiplications and divisions to the correct number of significant figures.

12. Perform each of the following calculations using the above stated rules and report the answer to the correct
number of significant figures.

a. 17.1 + 0.77 = __________

b. 12.4 x 5.3 = ______________
c. (5.82 x 760 x 325) / (723 x 273) = ______________
d. (4.523 x 103)/ (2.71 x 101) = _____________
e. (2.100 – 1.8) / 1.243 = ______________
13. Convert the following numeric values to scientific notation.
a. 200.0
b. 0.000120
c. 2000
d. 2000.
e. 0.0005
Dimensional Analysis (aka Factor Label Method)
Show all work and record all answers to the correct number of significant figures. Conversions must be worked
in the Factor Label Method. 100 cm = 1 m 454 g = 1 pound 1000g = 1 kg

1. Convert 17.5 kg into pounds.

2. Convert 1.2 x 1025 cubic centimeters into cubic meters.
