2 Read a short ghost story and answer


the questions.

It was a cold, wet night when Martha decided to


drive over to see her mother who lived in the
next village. Her mother was not well and
Martha was worried. Martha had cooked a
delicious dinner but only ate a little. She put the
rest of the food in a pot to take to her mother.
There was a lot but it was her mother’s favourite
– chicken stew. Martha was on an empty
country road quite near to her mother’s house
when the car made a strange noise and
stopped. Martha got out of the car with the food
and decided to walk the few miles to her
mother’s house. While walking, she heard a
sound like someone was behind her but when
she turned around there was nobody there.
Martha felt afraid. She walked faster. It was very
dark and there were no other cars or people.
Suddenly, Martha felt the pot of food move in
her hands – someone was taking it from her!
She tried to run but she could not because it felt
as though someone was holding her shoulder.
Yet, when she looked behind her there was
nothing. Then there was the sound of eating.
After a while, the pot was put back into her
hands and she was able to run. She ran all the
way to her mother’s house. When her mother
saw her at the door with a pot she was excited
because she could smell chicken stew. Martha
could not find anything to say. She just gave the
pot to her mother and ran into the house. Her
