Basic Concepts of Algebra

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses symbols to represent numbers and

quantities. It's like a puzzle where you use these symbols to solve equations.

Key Concepts:
1. Variables:
○ These are symbols, usually letters like x, y, or z, that represent unknown
values.
2. Expressions:
○ Combinations of numbers, variables, and operators (+, -, *, /) that
represent a mathematical quantity.
○ Example: 2x + 5y
3. Equations:
○ Mathematical statements that show equality between two expressions.
○ Example: 2x + 3 = 9
4. Inequalities:
○ Mathematical statements that show a relationship between two
expressions, such as greater than (>), less than (<), greater than or equal
to (≥), or less than or equal to (≤).
○ Example: x + 2 > 5
5. Functions:
○ Relationships between two sets of numbers, where each input (x-value)
corresponds to exactly one output (y-value).

Basic Operations:
● Addition: Combining numbers or variables.
● Subtraction: Taking away one number or variable from another.
● Multiplication: Repeated addition or scaling.
● Division: Splitting a number or variable into equal parts.

Properties of Real Numbers:

● Commutative Property: The order of numbers doesn't matter for addition and
multiplication.
○ Example: a + b = b + a, a * b = b * a
● Associative Property: The grouping of numbers doesn't matter for addition and
multiplication.
○ Example: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c), (a * b) * c = a * (b * c)
● Distributive Property: Multiplying a number by a sum or difference is the same
as multiplying the number by each term and then adding or subtracting the
results.
○ Example: a(b + c) = ab + ac
