Server Upgrade Proposal for a

Manufacturing Company
1. Company Situation
The manufacturing company currently has an outdated server setup that is slow, prone to
downtime, and at risk for security breaches. With a large amount of data to process such as
inventory, production, and sales, the company needs a reliable and modern solution to
ensure seamless operations.

2. Recommendation for Server Upgrade

2.1. Switch to Linux-Based Server

Linux is stable, secure, and cost-effective. It's open-source, meaning no licensing fees,
making it a highly efficient choice for the company's server infrastructure.

2.2. Upgrade the Hardware

2.2.1. Replace the Old HDDs with SSDs

HDDs are outdated and prone to failure. SSDs offer much faster read/write speeds and are
more reliable. The company should switch to SSDs with RAID configuration for added
redundancy and data security.

2.2.2. Upgrade the Processor and RAM

The company’s current server uses an old processor and has limited RAM. Upgrading to
modern Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC processors and increasing RAM to at least 64 GB will
significantly boost performance and scalability.

2.3. Implement Virtualization (Proxmox)

Using virtualization will allow the company to run multiple virtual machines on one
physical server, leading to cost savings and more efficient server management.

2.4. Enhance Security

2.4.1. Use Firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)

Implementing UFW firewall and using tools like Snort or Suricata for intrusion detection
will protect the server from cyber-attacks and unauthorized access.

2.4.2. Use VPN for Secure Remote Access

Set up OpenVPN for secure remote access to ensure that all communications between
remote employees and the server are encrypted and safe.
2.4.3. SSL Certificates for Encrypted Communication
SSL certificates should be used to encrypt all communication between users and the server,
protecting sensitive information.

2.5. Regular Maintenance and Monitoring

2.5.1. Use Monitoring Tools (Nagios/Zabbix)

Monitoring tools like Nagios or Zabbix will help detect potential problems before they cause
downtime, ensuring continuous server operations.

2.5.2. Set up Regular Backups (Bacula or rsync)

Automated backups using tools like Bacula or rsync will ensure that the company’s data is
protected and easily restorable in case of system failure.

3. Summary of Benefits
1. Increased Performance: Faster transactions and data processing with SSDs, upgraded
CPUs, and more RAM.
2. Greater Reliability: With RAID storage, SSDs, and a redundant power supply, the company
can ensure maximum uptime and data protection.
3. Scalable Solution: The server will be ready to handle more users and data as the company
grows.
4. Enhanced Security: Advanced security measures like firewalls, IDS, VPN, and SSL
encryption will protect sensitive data.
5. Cost-effectiveness: Using open-source software like Linux minimizes costs while ensuring
high performance.
