and instructions
Task 1: Group Activity (60% Assessment Weightage)

In this task, students will simulate a design and production planning

submission of a small to medium sized construction project, to a UK
planning authority. You are expected to identify a new build residential,
commercial, or mixed-use project or a major extension to an existing
building. You are expected to adapt or use available drawings (i.e.,
Drawings production is beyond scope of this assignment). Task 1
submission will have the following 2 components:

2024 -Assessment Brief – Construction Scheduling and Control 1

Component A: Design and Planning Statement (2,500 words)
This section will address the following suggested topics as relevant to the
chosen project:
A1: Description of features of the proposed construction site
• Details about the location and context of the site, including the
existing use and any site constraints.
• Adjacencies analysis and interfaces with adjoining buildings e.g.,
size, age, style, condition. Explanation of how the proposed
development fits into the surrounding area.
• Scale and appearance of proposed development. Discussion on
how project addresses potential adverse concerns related to
overbearing impact or neighbours’/occupant amenities.
• Description of key considerations about site layout, relationship to
site boundaries, car parking arrangements and approaches to and
around the site.

A2: Design and Planning Considerations

• Explanation of the key elements of design thinking and
demonstration of commitment to key design guidelines (e.g.,
Secure by Design, Building for Life) and alignment with local and
national policies (e.g., NPFF);
• Description of the architectural style, materials, and other design
features. Consideration of the impact on the local character and
settings.
• Space considerations within the building including natural light,
horizontal and vertical circulation within the building and
compliance with space standards.
• Information about how people, vehicles, and services will access
the site, including pedestrian and cyclists’ access.
• Details about parking facilities and any proposed changes to
existing access points.
• Consideration of any visual, noise, or other environmental impacts
of proposed development. Review of any mitigation measures to
address any identified issues.
• Any soft (e.g., trees or shrubs to be planted) or hard landscaping
(e.g., lighting) features.
• Details of refuse storage and collection.
• Explanation of how the design promotes accessibility for people
with disabilities. Review of how inclusive design principles have
been incorporated.
• Information on any sustainable design features or technologies
incorporated into the selected project, including consideration of
energy efficiency, water conservation, and other environmental
factors.

Component B: Construction Management and Offsite Construction Plan

(2500 words)
B1: Construction management plan will cover some of the following topics
(1500 words):
• Construction schedule showing key project stages.
• Parking arrangements for vehicles of site operatives and visitors.
• Site waste management plan indicating waste minimisation and
recycling strategies.
• Arrangement of loading and unloading of plant and materials.

2024 -Assessment Brief – Construction Scheduling and Control 2

• Storage of plant and materials during production.
• Construction methods to be used, including any use of cranes or
heavy equipment, and impact mitigation.
• The erection and maintenance of security hoarding.
• Measures to control the emission of dust and dirt during
construction.
• Risk assessment and mitigation strategy.
• Temporary traffic management measures.
• Neighbourhood impact management plan.

B2: Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and Circular Economy

Considerations (1000 words)
Your local authority is particularly encouraging use of Modern
Methods of Construction approaches to achieve better social,
economic, and environmental outcomes. In context of chosen
project or project category, discuss the following:

• Potential of using MMC or DfMA approaches,

• Identification of suitable MMC for the project with
consideration for the whole building life cycle from digital
design to management & integration.
• Strategy for transportation of offsite components from the
factory to the site, transport strategy, supply chain
management for materials.
• Manufacturing process showing key equipment used at each
stage (substructure, superstructure, internal and external
works), and onsite works and offsite components de-
construction process (circular economy).

Note:
There is an expectation that students will demonstrate their
understanding, critical analysis and interpretation by good visual
illustrations supported by succinctly written explanation. A formal report
will be submitted via Turnitin as a single document, including the following
components:
• Cover sheet identifying the module, the date and the student’s
number.
• Table of Contents
• Component A: Design and Access Statement
o Site Introduction
o Design and Planning Considerations
• Component B: Construction Management and Offsite
Construction Plan
• Conclusions
• References (in Harvard Style)
• Appendices (if required).

Task 2: Group Presentation (Assessment Weightage 20%)

As part of the activity assessment, you will need to present your work to
the class, in the allocated class time (tbc- likely to be on 19th April, 2024 for
FT Students & 30th April, 2024 for DL Students). Your presentation must
not exceed the maximum allotted time of 10 minutes, followed by 5

minutes for Q&A session. Failure to attend and present at the designated
presentation time will result in a loss of 20 marks for this sub-task (i.e., 20
marks out of the total of 100 marks for this assignment). Prior to
presentation, you could share draft reports with the tutor. This will
provide an opportunity for formative assessment.

Task 3: Practical Production Managements Skills Demonstration-

Individual Task (Assessment Weightage 20%):
During teaching, students will be handed out 5 construction management
problem sets. These will focus on practical skills in areas of:
1. Problem Set (PS1): Construction planning and Scheduling
Fundamentals.
2. PS2: Project Scheduling Case Studies
3. PS3: Computer Integrated Planning and Scheduling
4. PS4: Project Resource Management
5. PS5: Project Monitoring and Control
Students are expected to provide evidence of solving only 4 problem sets
and add links to solutions through Turnitin as part of individual report
submission.

Assessment criteria are as below.
