DISCUSSION

FOUR TYPES OF PARAGRAPH

1. EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPHS
These explain something or give information about a topic. Aside from explaining ideas, they may
give directions or show how to do something. This may be done through various methods such as
cause and effect, problem and solution, question and answer, definition, analysis, process, etc.
resuscitation and the quest for the dead person; the external, or separable soul; the life index, or
life token; and the fighting that lasts for months, even years. (example on page 64 in your
textbook)
2. DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH
These describe persons, places, thing, or ideas. In order to describe well, you use the five senses to
create an image or picture of the topic you are writing about. This way, you help the reader see,

hear, smell, taste and feel what you are describing this is similar to writing poems that rely on
image or sense impressions. (example on page 64 in your textbook)
3. PERSUASSIVE PARAGRAPH
These seek to influence readers’ opinion, beliefs and actions. You write persuasive paragraph by
giving your own opinion and supporting it with facts, examples and other proofs. (example on
page 64 in your textbook)
4. NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH
These tell a story, relate an incident, or report a series of actions. You share with the readers the
details of an experience to engage them into the story and anticipate what is going to happen next.
Narrative paragraphs need the colorful details of description to make the story come alive and
vivid. (example on page 64 in your textbook)

*Try to answer Activity 12: Which type is it? in your textbook on page 65.

WHAT IS STORY TELLING?

Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of
a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination.
Storytelling Is Interactive.
Storytelling involves a two-way interaction between a storyteller and one or more listeners. The
responses of the listeners influence the telling of the story. In fact, storytelling emerges from the
interaction and cooperative, coordinated efforts of teller and audience..
Storytelling Uses Words.
Storytelling uses language, whether it be a spoken language or a manual language such as Sign
Language. The use of language distinguishes storytelling from most forms of dance and mime.
Storytelling Uses Actions Such As Vocalization, Physical Movement And/Or Gesture.
These actions are the parts of spoken or manual language other than words. Their use
distinguishes storytelling from writing and text-based computer interactions. Not all nonverbal language
behaviors need to be present in storytelling. Some storytellers use body movement extensively, for
example, whereas others use little or none.
Storytelling Presents A Story.
Storytelling always involves the presentation of a story—a narrative.
Storytelling Encourages The Active Imagination Of The Listeners.
In storytelling, the listener imagines the story. In most traditional theatre or in a typical dramatic
film, on the other hand, the listener enjoys the illusion that the listener is actually witnessing the
character or events described in the story.

Activity 2: Identifying Types of Paragraphs
Identify each of the following as either a descriptive, narrative, informative, or persuasive paragraph.
Write your answer in the box provided.

1. Many people associate the taste of pumpkins with fall. In October, companies from Starbucks to
McDonalds roll out their pumpkin-flavored lattes and desserts. Here is how to make an easy
pumpkin pie using only five ingredients. First, make sure you have all of the ingredients.

2. The iPhone 6 is unexpectedly light. While size of its screen is bigger than those of the iPhones that
came before, it is thinner, and its smooth, rounded body is made of aluminum, stainless steel, and
glass. The casing comes in a whitish silver, gold, or a color the company calls “space gray,” the color
of the lead of a pencil, with darker gray accents.

3. Following the 2012 Olympic Games hosted in London, the UK Trade and Investment department
reported a £9.9 billion boost to the economy. Although it is expensive to host the Olympics, if done
right, they can provide real jobs and economic growth. This city should consider placing a bid to
host the Olympics.

4. “I don’t think that’s a good idea,” said Jaelyn.

“You never used to be such a girl!” retorted Orin, pushing open the door.
Reluctantly, Jaelyn followed.
