DISCUSSION

There are many factors to consider in speaking to convey what a person wants to say. They say it
is not what one says but how it is said that matters.

Prosody- study of all elements of language that contribute toward acoustic and rhythmic effects.
Speech- power of speaking; form of communication in spoken language.

2 Types of Speech Sounds

Segmental Suprasegmental
-Individual unit of speech -Speech features that accompany or added over a
segmental
Example: vowels, consonants, diphthongs Example: volume, projection, pitch, stress,
intonation, juncture, speed

PROSODIC FEATURES OF SPEECH

VOLUME- ( loudness or softness) can be used to express emotions like surprise, fear or anger. A change
in volume also indicates an exclamation mark, or a word or a group of words is written in capital letters.

PROJECTION-( loudness and clarity) is making one’s voice loud and clear when addressing an audience,
with or without a microphone. Good projection is the basis of good volume. Projection depends on proper
breathing and observing phrase boundaries so that one will not run out of breath.

How to improve voice projection?

1.Use proper vocal warm-up

2. Understand what voice projection is

3. Get breath support and airflow dialed in

4. Practice vocal exercises

5. Practice and visualization

STRESS (emphasizing a particular syllable in a word) can be used to differentiate parts of a sentence. (‘)
is used to mark the stressed syllable

Read Activity 5: This is Not Stressful, in your textbook on page 29.

2 Types of Stress

1. Word Stress- shows what syllables in a word is stressed

- same word can have the stress in different places, which changes the meaning of the word
Example: 1. I gave Mitch a present.- (noun)
I will present at the conference. (verb)
2. I love shiny objects. (noun)
I object to your bad attitude. (verb)
2. Sentence Stress- shows which word/s in a sentence is/are stressed
Example: 1. I can’t do it. (It is not possible for me to do it now)
I can’t do it. (I simply cannot afford to do it)
I can’t do it. (It is not for me to do that)
PITCH- (high tones and low tones) can be used to express surprise, disappointment, boredom,
desperation or puzzlement. Pitch can also be used to emphasize important points, information or
questions in a speech.

1- Low 2-normal 3-high 4-extra high

2 | Quarter 1-Module 2: Prosodic Features of Speech MOVERS ACADEMY, INC.

INTONATION( rise and fall of the voice in speech) conveys meaning, e.g. “I love you?” (a question) vs. “ I
love you” ( statement). In a question, the rising intonation is used. In a statement, the falling intonation is
used.

2 Types of Intonation

1. Rising-Falling Intonation-(2-3-1 Pattern)-used for statements or questions that require

definite answers.
Example: Who is he? He is responsible

2. Rising Intonation- (2-3-3 Pattern) used for questions that are answerable by yes or no.
Example:
Are you alright?

JUNCTURE ( pausing) can be used to emphasize a word, phrase or a crucial statement. Pausing allows
listeners to take important words and concepts in, as well as help listeners remain focused on what a
speaker is saying for longer periods of time. Pausing also indicates commas, semi colons, colons or
periods in written material that is being read aloud

1. Single bar (/)- slight pause between two thoughts in a sentence

Ex: Doctors,/nurses,/ and hospital beds/ remain /in short supply
2. Double bar(//)- longer pause between two thoughts groups in a sentence
Ex. One evening// I joined my friend// Ella and Shane// in going to the beach.
3. Double Cross (#)- a drop in pitch which is usually found at the end of a sentence.
Ex. The frontliners stand tall in the fight.#

In your textbook on page 47, answer Activity 10: Where’s the Juncture?

RATE OF SPEECH (tempo) can be used to express impatience, denial, or reflection. Tempo can also be
used to express words such as : rambled, rattled, snapped or blurted out. Tempo is about how fast or how
slow you speak.
