Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Mathematics Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on (Simplifying Radical
Expressions Using the Laws of Radicals).

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from public
institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners’ progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on (Simplifying Radical

In the activities you have just done, were you able to simplify the
expressions using the laws of exponents? Were you able to transform the given
expression with rational exponents into radicals? These skills are needed before
you go on to the next lesson which is about simplifying radical expressions
using the laws on radicals.

6
What is It?

Since you are now capable of writing expressions with rational exponents as radicals,
let us now learn how to simplify radical expressions through the following laws of radicals.
Remember that the laws of radicals are obtained directly from the laws of exponents
by means of the definition:

𝑎 𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚 = ( √𝑎)

Generalization

Fill each blank with the correct word to complete each sentence.

A 1__________ expression is an expression containing the symbol √ called radical

𝑛
sign. A 2___________ expression can be written in the form √𝑎𝑚 where n is called the index,
m is the power and a is the radicand. A radical expression can be simplified using the laws of
radicals. Laws of radicals are directly obtained by the laws of 3___________.

There are three ways on how to simplify radical expression such as: Removing
4___________ powers , Reducing the 5___________ to the lowest possible order, and
6___________ the denominator of the radicand.7___________ is the process of removing
the radical sign in the denominator.

The simplified form of a radical expression would require the following: No

8___________ factor of a radicand that has an exponent equal to or greater than the index,
no radicand contains a 9___________ , and no 10___________ contains a radical sign.
