Complex Derivative
1. Using the limit definition find the derivative of f (z) = z 2 − 2z at the
point where (a) z = z0 (b) z = −1

2. Using the rules of differentiation find the derivative of the following

functions:

• f (z) = 3z 2 − 2z + 4
• f (z) = (2z 2 + i)5
z−1
• f (z) = 2z+1

3. Determine whether each of the following functions is analytic or not?

a. f (z) = (x3 + 2y) + (x − 3y 2 )i

b. f (z) = z 2 + z̄, where z = x + iy
c. 2x + ixy 2

4. If f (z) is analytic find v where u = x3 − 3xy 2

Solutions
This is a collection of solutions of problems from each question

z 2 + 2z∆z + (∆z)2 − 2(z + ∆z) − z 2 − 2z 2z∆z + (∆z)2 − 2∆z

1. lim = lim
∆z→0 ∆z ∆z→0 ∆z
∆z(2z + ∆z − 2)
= lim = 2z − 2. At z = z0 ,f 0 (z) = 2z0 − 2, at
∆z→0 ∆z
z = −1, f 0 (−1) = 2(−1) − 2 = −4

2. f (z) = (2z 2 + i)5 ; f 0 (z) = 5(4z)(2z 2 + i)4

3. f (z) = z 2 + z̄, where z = x + iy.

f (x+iy) = x2 −y 2 +2ixy+x−iy; u(x, y) = x2 −y 2 +x, v(x, y) = 2xy−y.
Let’s test Cauchy-Riemann equations

∂u ∂v
= 2x + 1; = 2x − 1
∂x ∂y

It’s obvious that Cauchy-Riemann are not satisfies, hence f (z) is not
analytic.

4. Since f (z) is analytic

∂u ∂v ∂u ∂v
= ; =−
∂x ∂y ∂y ∂x
and
∂u ∂v
= = 3x2 − 3y 2
∂x ∂y
Integrate both sides with respect to y keeping x constant.

v = 3x2 y − y 2 + F (x)

also from the other equation

∂u ∂v
=− = −6xy = −(6xy + F 0 (x))
∂y ∂x

Integrate with respect to x F (x) = C; v = 3x2 y − y 2 + C
