Lesson 1.1 functions & relations

Function- it is a relationship between sets of x and y, such that the value of
x corresponds with an exactly (1) value of y.
Relation- it is a relationship between sets of x and y, such that a single x
variable is associated with more than 1 value of y variable.
Domain- set of all x-components of the ordered pairs. Input
Range- set of all y-components of the ordered pairs. Output
1.) {(1,3), (2,4), (5,7), (6,8)}
Domain: { 1,2,5,6 } Range: { 3,4,7,8}
Functions or NOT?
A= {(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(4,5)} Function
B= {(-2,4),(-1,1),(0,0),(1,1),(2,4)} Function
C+= {(1,0),(0,1),(-1,0),(0,-1)} Not a function
Functions can be represented through mapping

Function Not a Function Function

Functions as a graph. We can identify if it’s function or not by using a

vertical line test.
A graph of a mathematical relation is said to be function if any vertical line
passing through touches the graph at exactly one point.
Lesson 1.2 Domain & RANGE OF FUNCTION
Domain- all the possible x-values of a function.
Range- all the possible y-values of a function.
Some restrictions to consider when finding the domain and range of some
functions that involve the following:
1.Radicands with even indeces:
Radicands munst be non-negative
2.Fractions:
Denominator must not be equal to 0.

Domain: {-5+,∞}

Range: {5+,-∞}
Finding the Domain and Range
1.) {(-2,4), (-1,1), (-2,0), (1,5), (2,-2)}
Domain: {-2,-1,1,2} Range: {4,1,0,5,-2}

2.)
x 0 1 2 3 4
y -5 -4 -3 -2 -1

Domain: {0,1,2,3,4} Range: {-5,-4,-3,-2,-1}

3.)

D: {All real numbers}

R: {All real numbers}

4.)
D: {-2,+ ∞}

R: {1,+ ∞}

If equation is linear the domain and range is all real numbers

If equation is quadratic domain is all real numbers.
Lesson 1.3 Operation of functions
Rules on performinig operations of functions f and g.
a.) SUM: f+g
y= (f+g)x = f(x) + g(x)
b.) Difference: f-g
y= (f-g)x = f(x)-g(x)
c.) Product: f•g
y= (f•g)x = f(x)•g(x)
d.) Quotient: f/g
f f (x )
y= ( )x = , g(x)≠0
g g (x)
e.) Composition of Function: f ∘ g y= (f ∘ g) x = f(g(x))
