VIIIth SEMESTER EXAMINATION, June 2022 – 23

IVth Year B.Tech. – Mechanical Engineering
OPERATION RESEARCH
Duration: 3:00 hrs Max Marks: 100
Note: - Attempt all questions. All Questions carry equal marks. In case of any ambiguity or missing
data, the same may be assumed and state the assumption made in the answer.
Q 1. Answer any four parts of the following. 5x4=20
a) What are the characteristics of Operations Research?
b) What do you understand by graphical method? Give its limitations.
c) Discuss practical applications of assignment problem.
d) Explain briefly the importance of the principle of dominance.
e) Discuss various unusual customer/server behaviors.
f) Why crashing is necessary?
Q 2. Answer any four parts of the following. 5x4=20
a) What are the phases of Operations Research?
b) Define slack, surplus and artificial variable.
c) Discuss the methods used to find initial basic solution in transportation problem.
d) Define the following: saddle point, pay-off matrix, pure strategy.
e) Write short note on Kendall Lee notation for Queuing system.
f) Differentiate between CPM and PERT?
Q 3. Answer any two parts of the following. 10x2= 20
a) XYZ factory manufactures two articles A and B. To manufacture article A, a
certain machine has to work for 1.5 hours and in addition a craftsman has to work
for 2 hours. To manufacture article B, the machine has to be-worked for 2.5 hours
and in addition the craftsman has to work for 1.5 hours. In a week factory can avail
of 80 hours of machine time and 70 hours of craftsman’s time. The profit on each
article A is Rs. 50 and that on each article B is Rs. 40. If the entire article produced
can be sold away, find how many of each kind should be produced to earn the
maximum profit each week. Formulate the LP. model and solve it graphically.
b) A finished product must weigh exactly 150 grams. The two raw materials used in
manufacturing the product are A, with a cost of Rs. 2 per unit and with a cost of Rs.
8 per unit. At least 14 units of B and not more than 20 units of A must be used. Each
unit of A and B weighs 5 and 10 grams respectively. How much of each type of raw
material should be used for each unit of the final product to order to minimize the
cost? Use simplex method.
c) Explain the primal-dual relationship with suitable example.
Q 4. Answer any two parts of the following. 10x2= 20
a) Two competitors are competing for the similar product. The payoff matrix in
terms of their advertising plan are as follows:
Competitor B
Competitor A
Large advt. Medium advt. Small advt.
Large advt. 70 80 50
Medium advt. 90 60 95
Small advt. 105 90 65
Find optimal strategies and value of the game.
b) An airline company has drawn up a new flight schedule involving five flights. To
assist in allocating five pilots to the flights, it has asked them to state their
preference scores by each flight a number out of 10. The higher the number, the
greater is the preference. Certain of these flights are unsuitable to some pilots owing
to domestic reasons. These have been marked with a X
Flight number
1 2 3 4 5
A 8 2 X 5 4
Pilot B 10 9 2 8 4
C 5 4 9 6 X
D 3 6 2 8 7
E 5 6 10 4 3
What should be the allocation of the pilots to flights in order to meet as many
preferences as possible?
c) A manufacturer wants to ship 22 loads of his product as shown below. The matrix
gives the kilometers from sources of supply to the destinations
Destinations
D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 Supply
S1 5 8 6 6 3 8
Source
S2 4 7 7 6 5 5
S3 8 4 6 6 4 9
Demand 4 4 5 4 8
Shipping cost is Rs. 10 per load per km. What shipping schedule should be used to
minimize total transportation cost?
Q 5. Answer any two parts of the following. 10x2= 20
a) In the railway marshalling yard, goods train arrives at a rate of 30 trains per day.
Assuming that the inter arrival time follows an exponential distribution and the
service time (the time taken to hump a train) distribution is also exponential with an
average of 36 minutes. Calculate
(i) expected queue size (line length)
(ii) probability that the queue size exceeds 10
If the input of train increases to an average of 33 per day what will be the change (i)
and (ii)?
b) The following table gives the activities in a construction project and other
relevant information
Activity Immediate Time (Days) Direct Cost (Rs.)
predecessors Normal Crash Normal Crash
A - 4 3 60 90
B - 6 4 150 250
C - 2 1 38 60
D A 5 3 150 250
E C 2 2 100 100
F A 7 5 115 175
G D,B,E 4 2 100 240
Indirect costs vary as follows:
Days 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6
Cost 600 500 400 250 175 100 75 50 35 25
(Rs.)
(i) Draw an arrow diagram for the project
(ii) Determine the project duration which will return in minimum total
project cost.
c) A project consists of eight activities with the following relevant information
Activity Immediate predecessor Estimated duration (days)
Optimistic Most likely Pessimistic
A - 2 2 8
B - 2 5 8
C - 3 3 9
D A 2 2 2
E B 3 6 15
F C 3 6 9
G D,E 4 7 16
H F,G 2 3 4
(i) Draw the PERT network and find out the expected project completion
time
(ii) What duration will have 95% confidence for project completion?
(Given are under normal curve from Z = 0 to Z = 1.65 is 0.45)
