comprises works dealing with beauty and power of Nature .
At the same time , the works also narrates the sublime and frightening moods of nature which
humbled man and showed him his place in the universe.
Over the years , Literature being a larger domain in itself has also become so broad that it
continues to include other domains and fields , may it be - technology, science, environment ,
society etc.It welcomes a variety of thoughts and ideas to give a larger perspective . Ecology
deals with organisms and environment and can be defined as a medium in which plants,
animals and people are related to each other as well as with the environment. In this bond or
relationship , they are so much Interdependent on each other that any disturbance in one
disturbs the another.Being interdisciplinary ,
Ecocriticism involves both natural and social sciences , Ecocriticism is a recent approach that
has found its way in Literature .As a developing domain, it has caught the attention of various
writers around the world , especially in India , where writers from different social groups have
came forward to present their concern towards Nature with powerful works .
This paper focuses on some select regional works from distinct parts of India that deals with the
different ecological perspectives put forward by writers in their respective regional languages
and which are later translated given the immense significance that they hold.
Softly dies a lake by Akkineni Kutumbarao translated from Telugu by Vasanth Kannabiran is an
elegy to a lake which once flourished with its natural vegetation and inhabitants and at large the
bountiful variants of fishes , is Now laid bare like shard of shattered glass .The lake kolleru
which was once full of life is now reduced to a dried-up drain due to the over aquaculture and
pollution and on the other hand , Dweepa:Island, a novella by
NA D'Souza translated from Kannada by Sushila Punitha , deals with the submersion of villages
due to the Shravathi hydroelectric project .In this work , the land wrestles with the water to keep
itself from being swallowed .
Another environmental concern that comes forward in the form of the hazards of mining is
discussed in - The Upheavel by Pundalik N. Naik , translated from konkani by Vista Pai .This
novel is about the happenings which took place in a self sufficient agricultural community when
the mining Industry takes over.
All these works show that the avarice of mankind and its lack of seriousness in handling its
natural habitat to meet an ever increasing greed more than their actual need, has brought
ecology to an edge of disaster.
As suggested by Joseph meeker in his book - " The comedy of Survival " , humankind , in order
to be an integral part of the Earth , first need to be better stewards of our Earth .
