DISCUSSION/ OPINION ESSAY


I. Pre-writing

1. Definition
* Definition
- The Discussion/ Opinion essay task tests your ability to discuss opposing opinions and to
give your own opinion.

- The question for an IELTS Discussion/ Opinion essay includes 2 parts:


+ Part 1: a statement containing two opposing views about the same topic.
For example: Some people think (view 1). Other people think (view 2)
+ Part 2: a question asking you to discuss both points of view and to explain what you think
about this topic.
For example:
 Discuss both views and give your opinion.
 Discuss both these views and then give your own opinion.
 Discuss both sides of this argument and give your own opinion.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

- Background statement: paraphrases the keyword in the question

Introduction to state opposing viewpoints

- Thesis statement: states what the essay will be about.

- Topic sentence: 1st view of the argument


Body paragraph 1
- Supporting ideas and details: examples, explanation, results,
etc.).

- Topic sentence: 2nd view of the argument.


Body paragraph 2
- Supporting ideas and details: examples, explanation, results,
etc.).

- Summarize the main points.

- Give/restate your opinion.

4. Language for Writing

4.1. Introduction

1. Background statement (Paraphrase the question):

- Opinions are divided on + whether + S1 + V1 (1st view) + or S2 + V2 (2nd view).


- People have different views/ opinions about whether + S1 + V1 (1st view) or S2 + V2 (2nd view).
- While many people claim/ believe that S1 + V1 (1st view), others suggest that S2 + V2 (2nd view).

2. Thesis statement:

- This essay will analyze/ discuss both sides of this argument/ both points of view, and then I will give
my own perspective.
- In my opinion, although there are certain benefits/ advantages related to + N/NP1 (view 1), S + benefit

Task 3. Read the Writing task below and brainstorm the ideas for the task based on the given

while other jobs involve frequent travel and irregular working hours.
Discuss the advantages of both types of job and give your own opinion about which
one is best.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Task 3.1:
[Debating task]. Divide the class into teams. Each team will be given a point of view.
Students will work in groups to provide ideas and support their opinion. Students are
required to use the useful language to express their opinion. For each correct use of useful
language, the team will have 1 more extra point.
