(This gives an instruction to the facilitator to orient the learners and support the
parents, elder sibling etc. of the learners on how to use the module. Furthermore, this
also instructs the facilitator to remind the learners to use separate sheets in answering
the pre-test, self-check exercises, and post-test.)
(This communicates directly to the learners and hence, must be interactive. This
contains instructions on how to use the module. The structure and the procedure of
working through the module are explained here. This also gives an overview of the
content of the module. If standard symbols are used to represent some parts of the
module such as the objectives, input, practice task and the like they are defined and
explained in this portion.)

first 0 and the second 6,151, where the difference is 6,151 (6,151-0), multiply 6,151
by 0.1 to give 615.5, then add this 615.5 to the smaller number which is 0 in this
case. So D1 = 615.5. Differently from the previous method, where you have to find
out from among the distribution the kth, this one gives the value itself. Sometimes
these two methods give the same result but not always.

What’s New
A percentile is a quantile that divides a set of scores into 100 equal parts.
There are 99 percentiles. These values are from the first percentile up to the 99 th
percentile. The first percentile is denoted by P1, the second percentile by P2, and so
on. To find the position of percentile:
𝒌
Position of Pk = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 (n + 1)
Below is the illustration of percentiles.
The above illustration shows that the 50th percentile, P50 is equal to the median, Q2
and D5. Study these examples:
Example 1.
Find the 16th and 77th percentiles of the set of scores.
15, 68, 98, 46, 94, 50, 38, 27, 56, 44, 86, 77, 5, 55, 19
a. Arrange the scores in ascending order (from lowest to highest).
5, 15, 19, 27, 38, 44, 46, 50, 55, 56, 68, 77, 86, 94, 98
b. Locate the position of P16 and P77 using the formula
𝒌
Position of Pk = (n + 1)
𝟏𝟎𝟎
For P16 :
𝟏𝟔 𝟏𝟔 (𝟏𝟔)
Position of P16 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 (15 + 1) = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 2.56
For P77 :
𝟕𝟕 𝟕𝟕 (𝟏𝟔)
Position of P77 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 (15 + 1) = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 12.32
c. Solve for P16 and P77.
The 16th percentile is between the second and third scores. To
compute for P16 , we take the difference between the second and
third scores and multiply it by the decimal part of the position
computed from Step b. Finally, we add the result to the lower
score (i.e. the second score).
d. Solve for P16 and P77.
The 16th percentile is between the second and third scores. To
compute for P16 , we take the difference between the second and
third scores and multiply it by the decimal part of the position
computed from Step b. Finally, we add the result to the lower
score (i.e. the second score).
2nd score
5, 15, 19, 27, 38, 44, 46, 50, 55, 56, 68, 77, 86, 94, 98
3rd score
(19 – 15)0.56 = 4(0.56) = 2.24
P16 = 15 + 2.24 = 17.24
Therefore, 16% of the students have a score less than or equal to
17.24.
The 77th percentile is between the 12th and 13th scores. To
compute for P77, we take the difference between the 12th and 13th
scores and multiply it by the decimal part of the position computed
from Step b. Finally, we add the result to the lower score (i.e. the 12th
score).
12th score
5, 15, 19, 27, 38, 44, 46, 50, 55, 56, 68, 77, 86, 94, 98
13th score
(86 – 77)0.32 = 9(0.32) = 2.88
P77= 77 + 2.88 = 79.88
Therefore, 77% of the students have a score less than or equal to
79.88.

What’s New
Percentile Ranks are often expressed as a number between 1 and 99, with 50 being
the average. They are commonly used to clarify the interpretation of scores/values on
standardized tests. The percentile rank of a raw score is interpreted as the percentage of
examinees in the norm group who scored below the score of interest.
