Quartiles are the score point which divides a distribution into four equal parts.

In finding the Quartiles, find first the Position of the quartiles since the data
are already arranged in ascending order.

Find the Quartiles and Interpret.

c. Pos. of Q1 = ¼ (10+1) = ¼ (11) = 2.75 ≈ 3rd

Find Q2 and Interpret.

Mendenhall and Sincich Method define a different method of finding


quartile values using the formula below:

Lower Quartile (L) = Position of Q1 = ¼ (n+1)


If L falls halfway between two integers, ROUND UP to the

nearest integer.

Upper Quartile (U) = Position of Q3 = ¾ (n+1)


If U falls halfway between two integers, ROUND DOWN to the

nearest integer.

Ex 5. Find the lower and upper quartile of the data below using Mendenhall
and Sincich Method.

Solution: L = Position of Q1 = ¼ (n+1) = ¼ (9+1) = ¼ (10) = 2.5th


ROUND UP: 3rd

Ex 6. Find Q1 and Q3 given the scores of 8 students in their Math Activity
using Linear Interpolation.

• Position of Q1 = ¼ (9+1) = ¼ (10) = 2.5th (bet. 2nd and 3rd data)
(since the result is a decimal number, interpolation is needed)
• Steps in Interpolation
a. Subtract the 2nd data from the 3rd data
7–3=4
b. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in Position of
Q1.
4 x 0.5 = 2
c. Add the result to the 2nd data/ smaller data
2+3=5
• Therefore, Q1 = 5
• Position of Q1 = ¾ (9+1) = ¾ (10) = 7.5th (bet. 7th and 8th data)
(since the result is a decimal number, interpolation is needed)

a. Subtract the 7th data from the 8th data


30 – 27 = 3
b. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in Position of
Q3.

Other than the Mendenhall and Sincich method, interpolation is also an


alternative.

From the previous report on the number of new covid-19 cases to the top ten

these two methods give the same result but not always.

Percentile Ranks are often expressed as a number between 1 and 99, with 50 being
the average. They are commonly used to clarify the interpretation of scores/values on
standardized tests. The percentile rank of a raw score is interpreted as the percentage of
examinees in the norm group who scored below the score of interest.
