 5.7  Complex  Fractions
Complex  fraction:  a  fraction  that  has  one  or  more  fractions  in  the  numerator  or  denominator  (or  both)
or  powers  with  negative  exponents.

There  are  multiple  methods  for  simplifying  complex  fractions.

Method  1:  Combine  all  fractions  in   Method  2:    Multiply  numerator  &  denominator  by
numerator  &  denominator  until  you     LCD,  then  distribute  and  reduce.
have  a  single  fraction  over  a  single  fraction.
Then,  collapse  the  fraction.
• Numerator  times  reciprocal  of  denominator
(or  outsides  over  insides)

1 1 1 1

2 3   2 3
1 1 1 1

PROCESS  for  simplifying:
• Rewrite  w/o  negative  exponents
• Figure  out  LCD
• Multiply  numerator  &  denominator  by  LCD
• Simplify  (which  might  include  factoring  &  reducing)
• Remember  to  include  any  lost  domain  restrictions

Simplify  the  following:
Example  1:               Example  2:
−1 −1
a +b a−b

−1
a −b −1
a − b −1
−1

Example  3:    Simplify.
x +1 2
+
f (x) = x − 5 x + 3
x x
+
x+3 x−5

List  the  vertical  asymptote(s),  horizontal  asymptote(s),  and  any  holes  of  y  =  f(x),  then  sketch  its  graph.
