HA2 - Rational Functions, Graphs, Asymptotes, and Holes SUMMARY
Recall: An asymptote is a line that another graphed function will always approach, but never reach.
VERTICAL asymptotes (x = ____) HORIZONTAL asymptotes (y =____)
Where domain restrictions happen As the magnitude of x gets really big (in either direction), what does
(what can’t x be?) y approach?
Example: H.A. @ y = 3
Example: V. A. @ x = 3
Case 2: If the degree of the denominator is higher, then y approaches 0.
Example: H.A. @ y = 0
Example: NO H.A.
Reduced domain restrictions lead to HOLES in the graph (to find y-coordinate of the hole, plug the
domain restriction into the reduced form)
Example:
TO SKETCH GRAPH: Find points on the graph by plugging in x values to the left and right of vertical
asymptotes, then sketch graph using asymptotes.
Graph each function. Show any asymptotes as dashed lines. Write the equations of the horizontal
asymptotes and vertical asymptotes. Check your graphs using symbolab grapher (google it!)
