PROBLEM SET 2

TOPIC: DESIGN OF TORSION REINFORCEMENT

A rectangular doubly reinforced beam has a concrete strength f’c=24MPa with 4m simple
span and has a yield strength of fy=240MPa for longitudinal bars and stirrups. If the beam
experiencing a total factored shear load of 143kN,
a. Calculate the maximum spacing(mm) of stirrups required near the support using two legs
of stirrups considering torsional and shear effect.
b. Calculate the numbers of longitudinal bar if the beam has already 2-
20mm dia. compression bars and 8-20mm tension bars.

Compute the nominal torsional moment:

( ) ( )
2
Φ √ f'c ( Acp )
2
0.75 √ 24 (300(450) ) -6
Tn = = ( 10 )=14.88065019kN∙m
3 Pcp 3 2(300+450)

Compute the for ultimate torsional moment:

T u =Φ T n =0.75(14.88065019)=11. 16048764 kN∙m

Check if torsion reinforcement is required:

P cp =2 ( 300+450 ) =1500mm
2
Acp =300 ( 450 ) =13500 mm

( ) ( )
2
( A cp ) 2
( 13500 )
T th =0.083 λ √ f'c =0.083 (1) √ 24 ( 10 -6 ) = 4.9404kN∙m
Pcp 1500
Since Φ Tn > T th , therefore torsion reinforcement is required

Check if shear reinforcement is required:

Vc =0.17 λ √ f'c b w d
Vc =0.17(1) √ 24 (300 )( 367.5 )( 10 ) = 91.81912301kN
-3

VU ≥Φ Vc
143kN ≥ 0.75 ( 91.81912301kN )
143kN>68.86434226, therefore shear reinforcement is required

Check for adequacy of combined shear and torsion:

P h =2 ( 210+360 ) =1140mm
2
Aoh =210 (360 ) =75600 mm
2
Ao =0.85(75600)=64260mm

TOPIC: DESIGN OF TIED COLUMN

Design a square tied column to support a total factored load of 1430kN with concrete
strength of f’c = 24MPa yield strength of fy=240MPa. Given that the main reinforcement has
25mm dia., assuming 2% longitudinal steel is desired. Determine also the maximum spacing of a
10mm lateral ties with same yield strength of main reinforcement, with 30mm steel covering.

Calculate the dimension of the column:

[
P u = Φ 0.85 ( 0.85f'c ( Ag - A st ) +fy A st ) ]
[
1430× 103 = ( 0.75 ) 0.85 ( 0.85 (24 ) ( A g -0.02 A g ) +240 ( 0.02 Ag ) ) ]
2
Ag = 90478.2694 mm

b = √ 90478.2694 = 300.7960595mm
∴ Use b = 310mm

Calculate required steel area of longitudinal bar:

Ast = 0.02Ag

Ast = 0.02 ( 3102 ) = 1922 mm 2

Calculate the design for main reinforcement:

Ast
n=
Ab
1922
n= =3.915466248
0.25π ( 252 )
∴ Use n = 4pcs of main reinforcement

Calculate for maximum spacing of lateral ties:

a. 16 d b =16 ( 25 ) =400mm

c. Least dimension of the column = 300mm

b. 48 d t =48 ( 10 ) =480mm

∴ s = 300mm

TOPIC: ANALYSIS OF TIED COLUMN

Analyze a square tied column with 300mm by 300mm dimension. It is design with
concrete strength of f’c = 24MPa and using a deformed grade 40 steel bar with yield strength
fy=240MPa. Given that the main reinforcement has 8-25mm dia. bars
a. Calculate for nominal axial load it can support.
b. Calculate the axial live load if the column support axial deadload of 143kN

Calculate the ultimate axial load:

[
P u = Φ 0.85 ( 0.85f'c ( Ag - Ast ) +fy A st ) ]
[
P u = 0.75 0.85 ( 0.85 ( 24 ) ( 300 -0.25π ( 25 ) ( 8 ) ) + ( 240 ) (0.25π ( 25 ) ( 8 ) ) )
2 2 2
]
P u = 1720209.079N = 1720.209079kN

Calculate the nominal axial load:

Pu
Pn=
Φ
1720.209079kN
Pn = = 2293.612106kN
0.75

Calculate the axial live load:

P u = 1.2DL+1.6LL

1720.209079kN = 1.2 ( 143 ) +1.6LL

LL = 967.8806744kN
