7. During a certain period, the exchange rates were as follows:
1 sterling pound = Kshs 100.
1 sterling pound = 1.7 US dollar
1 US dollar = Kshs. 60.
A school management intended to import textbooks worth kshs. 500,000 from U.K. It changed the
money to sterling pounds. Later the management found out that the books were cheaper in U.S.A.
Hence it changed the sterling pounds to dollars. The management did not buy the books finally it
converted the money to Kenya Shillings. Calculate the amount of money the management ended up with.

8. Line P whose equation is 2y – 6 = 4x is perpendicular to another line Q. Find the equation of line
Q if it passes through point (-2, 7). (3mks)

9. The figure below is a parallelogram PQRS. If the area of the parallelogram is 48cm2, find the

Calculate to 4 s.f. the area of the triangle. (3mks)

13. Wingu café has 3 cooks and 4 waiters. The sum of their weekly wages is Kshs. 33,600. When
one of the cooks resigns and one more waiter is employed, the sum of their weekly wages is
Kshs. 32,900. Given that their salaries remained the same, calculate the weekly wages of the
waiter. (3mks)

14. Solve the inequality below and represent the solution on a number line. (2mks)

15. The arc ABC of a circle centre O and radius 5cm is one-third of the circumference of the circle.
Find the angle subtended by the arc at the centre. Take 𝜋 = 3.142 (3mks)

17. The diagram below represents a right pyramid on a square base ABCD. AB = 12cm and VC =
17cm.

a) Find the length of the perpendicular V to BC to one decimal place. (2mks)

b) The area of triangle VBC. (2mks)

c) The total surface area of the pyramid. (4mks)

d) Find the radius of a sphere whose surface area is 616 cm 2. Use 𝜋 = 22/7 (2mks)

18. Members of the scouting movement in a school decided to raise K£100 towards a charity. Five of
them were unable to contribute. Each of the rest had therefore to pay K£ 1 more in order to raise
the same amount.
a) If the original number of members was x, write down
i) An expression of how much each was originally to contribute. (1mk)

ii) Two distinct expressions of how much each contributed after the five pulled out. (2mks)

iii) Calculate the value of x. (4mks)

19. Two towns A and B are 80km apart. John started cycling from town A to town B at 10.00 a.m. at
an average speed of 40km/h. Juma started his journey from B to A at 10.30 a.m. and travelled by
car at an average speed of 60km/h.
a) Calculate;
(i) How far john was from town A when Juma started his journey. (2mks)

(ii) The distance from town A when John and Juma met. (3mks)

(iii) The time of the day when the two meet. (2mks)

b) Jane started cycling from town A to town B at 10.21 a.m. She met Juma at the same time as John
did. Determine Jane’s average speed to the nearest km/h. (3mks)

20. a) A conical solid has a radius of 8.4cm and a perpendicular height of 11.2cm. there is a larger
similar cone with a curved surface area of 2310 cm 2. Find the perpendicular height of the larger
cone. (5mks)

b) The two solids are made of metal of density 3.2g/cm3. A cylindrical hole of radius 3.5cm and
depth 7.5cm is drilled at the base of the larger cone. A hole is also drilled at the base of the smaller
cone such that the two solids are ultimately similar. Find the mass, to the nearest gram of the final
smaller cone. (5mks)

22. The diagram below shows a frustrum which represents a bucket with an open end diameter of
36cm and a bottom diameter of 24cm. the bucket is 30cm deep and is used to fill an empty
cylindrical tank of diameter 14m and height 1.2m.

a) Calculate ;
i) The capacity of the bucket in litres. (6mks)

ii) The capacity of tank in litres. (6mks)

b) Determine the number of buckets that must be drawn in order to fill the tank. (2mks)
