Midterm Exam_Part 2:
Technical Skills using ArcGIS Pro
Please read through these instructions carefully before beginning.

Download this Word document and use it to insert your screenshots. You will not be
using the mgisdata set. Instead, I have provided you with the
FastestGrowingCities.ppkx and Fastest_Growing_Cities_Data.zip to download.

In the first section or Part 2: Technical Skills using ArcGIS Pro, you will be working on
a coordinate system (CS) issue! Make sure you save often!

From a colleague, you have received a shapefile called FastCities. Unfortunately, the
shapefile is missing its .prj file, which informs ArcGIS Pro on the coordinate reference
system in which the geometry coordinates are expressed.

After e-mailing your colleague, you have received the following reply: “Sorry that the
coordinate system (.prj) file was missing. The coordinate system for the FastCities
shapefile is in North American Lambert Conformal Conic.”

1. Create a new folder and call it MidtermExam and place it in your gisclass\ClassProjects
folder

2. Download the FastestGrowingCities.ppkx and Fastest_Growing_Cities_Data.zip and

place them in your MidtermExam folder

 .ppkx is a Project Package File

 You will need to unzip the Fast_Growing_Cities_Data zipped folder, which contains
the one shapefile (FastCities).

3. Open the FastestGrowingCities.ppkx by double clicking on it – it will open the Project

directly into ArcGIS Pro.
4. Next, add the FastCities.shp to the USA map.

 Notice some cities are lying outside the U.S. boundary. Now that you have
received the missing coordinate system information (above) from your colleague,
fix this so that the FastCities display in their correct locations.

 Rename the map from “USA” to something more descriptive.

 Symbolize the fastest growing cities and label the city names

5. Once you are done, you will capture the following screenshots. Make your screen
capture as large as you can and check to see that they are legible.

 Include a screenshot of the Catalog pane showing me your Midterm Exam project
folder its contents.
 Include a screenshot of the Contents pane with the Map View of the FastCities in
their correct position.
 Include a screenshot of the corrected Coordinate System (CS) for the FastCities (be
sure to expand the Extent/Spatial Reference so that I can verify your work!)
6. Save your project, but do not exit – continue with #7. Note: You can still work on the
remainder on this exam even if you were not unable to resolve the coordinate system.

In the second section, you will be working on mapping and presenting GIS data.

7. Using this same map, design and create an attractive map layout showing the
Hispanic 2014 population by state. Consider the appropriate type of map to use to
present this type of data.
 Hint: You should create 3 map frames: lower 48 states; Alaska; and Hawaii.

 Think about whether this data needs to normalized.

 Create a layout that is not similar to the one on page 109.

 Label the state names

 Add the appropriate map elements – paying attention to the placement and
arrangement of the elements on your layout.

 Examine the legends in the Contents pane. Be sure they use good classification
schemes, rounded values, and appropriate significant digits or decimal places.

 Use the following citation as the source for the data used in this exercise
EsriTM Data and Maps (2014). EsriTM, [Downloaded file] Inc. Redlands

8. Once you are done, you will include the following screenshot(s). Make your screen
capture as large as you can and check to see that they are legible.

 Include a screenshot of the Contents pane (expand all layers so that I can examine
the legends) and Map View. If you cannot capture all of your layers in Contents
pane, provide a second screenshot.

[Insert here]

 Finally, export your final map layout as a PDF and upload it to Canvas. Your final
map layout should include the fastcities and Hispanic 2014 population by state.

9. Save your Word document and PDF as your lastname_MidtermExam. Upload to

Canvas.
