INTRODUCTION TO

ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT
SIMULATION – PART 1
BY AMAL NISHANTHA PATTIVIDANA

Version : 4.0

WHAT IS THE ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT
SIMULATION
• Sometimes we need to know the behaviors of electronic circuits
before the construction. And also there are some mathematical
models which can replicate the behaviors of electronic
components and devices. Then we use these mathematical
models to find out the behaviors of the electronic circuits.
Basically this is called as Electronic Circuit Simulation
IMPORTANCE OF ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT
SIMULATION
• There are so many advantages of simulating electronic circuits before
construct it.
• Some of design failures, unexpected behaviors and weaknesses can be identified.
• The design efficiency can be improved, designing lead time and the accuracy of the
circuit can be improved.
• One of the major advantage is reduce the research and development time, cost and
resources. You are not required to pay for the components and prototypes when you
are in simulating stage.
• And also some analysis are very difficult to do in practical situation. But it is very
simple when you are simulating.

• All these advantages are possible with electronic simulations software

ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS SIMULATION
SOFTWARE
• The electronic and software manufactures have developed
special electronic simulation software packages using their
mathematical models. They have developed user friendly, very
accurate and sophisticated software to simulate behaviors of
the electronic circuits. And also they support to visualize deep
view of our electronic circuits. Some of them support and
integrated with additional features like PCB designs, 3D
modeling, debugging tools and interacting with real world
circuits etc.
EXAMPLES FOR CIRCUIT SIMULATION
SOFTWARE
• Cadence Orcad PSpice
• MultiSim
• SiMetrix
• TINA
• PowerSim
• Circuit Simulator
• NgSpice
• Proteus
CADENCE ORCAD

• OrCad software is a proprietary software tool suite that is used

to design electronic circuits. Basically it is a CAD-EDA software
(Electronic design automation). The software is facilitated with
schematic editor, PCB designer, circuit simulator with PSpice.
• The software tool suit is developed by Cadence Design Systems
and written basically with C/C++ for Windows platforms. The
software is available under proprietary license.
• The OrCad name is originate from the words Oregon and CAD.
PROTEUS DESIGN SUITE

• The Proteus software is also a proprietary software tool suite

which is used to design electronic circuits. It is a CAD-EDA
software (Electronic design automation). The software is
basically supported for Schematic designs and simulations, PCB
designs, 3D modeling and also for the Microcontroller
simulations etc.
• The software is developed by Labcenter Electronics Ltd. for
Windows platforms under proprietary licence. The first version
of the software is released in 1988.
SPICE
• The meaning of the SPICE is Simulation Program with Integrated
Circuit Emphasis. That is a open source analogue circuit
simulator, used to simulate and predict board level behaviors
of a circuit.
• It was initially developed by Laurence Nagel at the Electronics
Research Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley in
1973. The initial software was written with Fortran language
under Public Domain License.
• Later in 1975, the improved version was developed and that’s
also written with Fortran.
SPICE CONT.…

• Then 3rd version was developed by Thomas Quarles in 1989

using C language under BSD license.
PSPICE
• PSpice was a modified version of Spice. It was a commercial
version and developed by MicroSim in 1984. And later MicroSim
was purchased by OrCad in 1998.
• The acronym of the PSpice is Personal Simulation Program with
Integrated Circuit Emphasis. It is capable of simulating and
verify analogue and mixed-signal circuits. and it is normally
used in OrCAD Capture designing tool.
• Basically it is capable of doing Transient Analysis, DC Sweep,
AC Sweep, Monte Carlo Analysis and Bias Point Analysis.
Additionally it supports several extra analysis as options.
SCHEMATIC DESIGNS FOR SIMULATION

• We use Capture CIS or Capture CIS Lite software tool for

simulation purposes. Then we can design the schematic design
of the circuits on this software tool.
• You can download Orcad lite version for academic purposes
and it is free of charge. All the features are included in lite
version and the limitation is the complexity of your circuit.

• For more details about lite version, refer the given manual.
FIRST STEPS
Project Name

• In Capture CIS of Cadence OrCAD

software tools, open new project.
• Then you must select PSpice
Analog or Mixed A/D for
simulation schematics. Otherwise
you can’t simulate your schematic
designs.
Project Save Location
• Then you can select the project template if you need them.
Otherwise we can select “Create a blank project”

• Then you can see the schematic window in a new project

PLEASE A COMPONENT

• Press “p” key or select the Place part tool

from draw tool bar.
• Then you must select only PSpice
libraries for simulation purposes.
PLEASE A COMPONENT CONT.…

• Here you must select the relevant library for

the component. If you don’t know the library,
you can just select all libraries here.
• Start to type the part name in Part text box
• Then you can see the list of parts in the box
below to the Part text box
• Press enter key to select component
PLEASE A COMPONENT CONT.…

• Then your mouse pointer will be changed into image of

component.
• Press R key to rotate the component if you need
• Then you can place the component on the canvas by
clicking
• You can add same component by clicking and press the
ESC button or right click and select end mode to when you
finish
• Then you can select other components also in same way
• Double click on the component value to
change the value of component.
Here you must change correct property
value.
WIRE THE COMPONENTS
• You can wire the components by pressing W key or
click Place wire (w) tool in Draw tool bar.
• Then cursor will be change into cross sign
• click on the pins of the components to wire each
component. you can click on nodes to connect a wire
when you are drawing.
GROUND REFERENCE
• You must add 0 Volt ground reference
to each circuit diagram when you are
going to simulate circuit
• Press G key or click on Place ground
tool in Draw tool bar to add ground
reference to your circuit.
• The 0 reference will be available in
Capsym Library. If there are no libraries
selected, you may need to add library as
the same way you did in adding parts.
• Finally you can exit the mode as same
way of you did in place part.
PSPICE NAMING AND CONNECTING RULES
• PSpice is a non-case sensitive. So the words like VIN, Vin, vin are
taken as same word.
• All element names should be unique. You can’t use as R1 for two or
more components.
• A 0 (ground) reference must be have in every circuit diagram that is
ready to simulate. All values will be shown with reference to this 0
reference.
• Each wire is called as a Node and the each node should be connected
with at least two element pins.

NOTE : When you are copy circuit diagram parts you must rename the
elements with difference element names (IDs) if they are same. old
versions may paste it with same name.
MOST COMMON PREFIXES

• In PSpice, you can use metric units for values. But there are
some differences in the PSpice symbols with usual symbols.
• Here is some symbols of the values Number Prefix Name
1012 “T” or “t” Tera
109 “G” or “g” Giga
106 “MEG” or “meg” Mega
