Summary
The poet Robert Frost recounts a small incident that changes his mood. It
seems very simple, but it has great significance. The poet was, once, very
depressed, and hopeless. He was in a state of sorrow and was lost in his
thoughts. He was standing under the hemlock tree. Suddenly a crow, sitting on
the tree, shook the tree and the fine particles of snow from the tree fell on the
poet. When the soft and cold snow fell on the poet, it changed his mood from a
state of sadness to happiness. He started feeling peaceful and refreshed. This
simple incident helped him to enjoy the remaining part of the day. He, thus,
became happy as it saved the rest of the day from being wasted and held in
regret.
2. What do the crow, hemlock tree and dust of snow represent in the poem?
Ans- The crow is black and ugly. It is not considered a pleasant sight. It is a
symbol of a bad omen. The hemlock tree is a poisonous plant with white
flowers. It is a symbol of sorrow. The poet chose the crow and the hemlock tree
to present his sadness and depression.
Ans- It is true that our attitude towards a problem plays a significant role in
making it positive or negative. Most of the people in today ‘s world lives a
stressful life. They face different types of problems in day-to-day life. A person
can neither keep away from problems completely nor find solutions for them
easily. But what makes the situation worse is one’s attitude towards the
problems. If we are depressed or sad the whole environment becomes gloomy.
But if we are ready to face the problem bravely and positively, it helps in
solving the problem also. The poet in the poem Dust of Snow was in a sorrowful
mood. He felt that the entire day was going to be gloomy. But when a crow
shook down snowflakes on him, his bitter mood changed into an optimistic one.
This small, regular incident wiped away his gloom and made him cheerful. He
could have become unhappy when such a thing occurred. But instead of seeing
the negative aspect of the incident, he took a positive vibe from it. Thus, the
poem teaches us to find happiness from insignificant things and to take
everything positively.
Theme/message of the poem
This poem conveys the message that nothing in life is small. Even trivial things
can bring positive changes in our life. In addition to this, it also shows that if we
take things positively in life, situations do change for the better. Even the small
help or good gestures we make for others make a major difference. Just believe
in those random acts of kindness we do and the way they brighten a person’s
day, and sometimes change their future. Noticing and appreciating all the tiny
things in life will make our life happier.
