Linux, we use a single command to update from the Oracle website.

It updates in minutes and downloads all necessary RPMs required for your

“When it comes to my favorite features of Oracle Linux, I have been impressed

with its ability to facilitate a smooth and efficient workflow system. This system is
responsible for gathering data from multiple cameras and transferring this
information to the backend systems. The system comprises around 10 to 12
servers, all of which are integrated into a highly reliable and redundant cluster
setup. Currently, we are using Red Hat Linux for our production needs, however,
we have plans to switch over to Oracle Linux in the near future. The reason for this
change is due to the specialized nature of our system which precludes the use of
cloud computing capabilities.”

Room for improvement:

“They keep increasing their license prices, making it increasingly costly. So many
banks and customers are moving away from Oracle Linux. They are going to other
flavors because they are cheaper.

You can add things to it, but Oracle may have added extra stuff that is not
supported by other Linux. Then they don't get used to it because we have to work
with standard Linux features.”

“Managing upgrades, especially moving from one version of Oracle Linux to

another, can be challenging. Unlike some systems that offer a straightforward,
plug-and-play upgrade process, Oracle Linux requires more effort. You need to
ensure proper backups of applications to safeguard against potential issues during
the upgrade. This aspect of the experience could benefit from improvement, as
other operating systems have streamline their upgrade processes.”

“The main challenge can be compatibility with products from other companies.
When you mix products from different vendors, you might experience difficulties.
Using products from the same platform simplifies things.

Before Oracle Linux existed, back in 2001 and 2003, Oracle didn't have its own
operating system and used other versions of Linux. We faced problems with these.
For example, the earlier Linux versions were 32-bit operating systems. This
limited the amount of memory we could allocate to our Oracle database instances.

©2024 PeerSpot, All Rights Reserved 16

Oracle Linux vs. Rocky Linux ▪ Oracle Linux

Let's say we had a server with 128 GB of RAM; with a 32-bit Linux operating
system, we couldn't use all of it for the database.

When later Linux releases became 64-bit, this limitation disappeared, giving us
much more memory to work with. The compatibility with Oracle products is a big
advantage. It makes it easier for DBAs (Database Administrators) to manage our
databases. If my boss tells me two or three new servers are arriving tomorrow, it's
not a problem. I can quickly set them up and prepare them – even doing
installations on multiple servers at the same time.

Sometimes we have applications that only run on operating systems like Windows,
creating difficulties. Microsoft's platform is easier for some people to understand,
but troubleshooting issues can be quite challenging, even for experienced
programmers. In contrast, troubleshooting on the Oracle platform is much
simpler, which is a key benefit.”

“There is a desire to include ZFS as a supported file system from the installation
phase. I find it to be an excellent file system that significantly simplifies storage
management on systems. Unlike other setups where you need both a file system
and a volume manager, ZFS combines these functionalities into a single package.
It provides a proven and stable solution, eliminating the need for continuous
testing with different technologies. ZFS is enterprise-proven and, compared to

other Linux file systems, stands out in terms of management efficiency. While
some file systems may offer slightly faster speeds, ZFS excels in overall
performance, manageability, and reliability, making it a top choice in the Linux
world. Another notable aspect that could be improved is minor compatibility with
Red Hat. This is crucial for customers seeking ISV support. ISVs often limit their
support to a select few distributions, typically Red Hat, and maintaining
compatibility is vital for application functionality.”

“NTP communication should be more concrete and robust. Time drifts happen
frequently, and the database restarts automatically to protect data integrity. The

good OS.”

“Calculating ROI can be challenging, particularly in our economy, where the dollar
rate keeps fluctuating a lot. Many factors that are considered in ROI calculations
are tied to the dollar, and our company is not doing good business as well.
However, we typically aim for solutions that will be effective for three to five years.
From Oracle's point of view, this solution is stable, reliable, and performs well. We
also have the local expertise to manage it. Overall, we are achieving a medium level
of ROI, and so far, I would say that it is an okay solution.”

“I don't think ROI is as quantifiable as market research groups attempt to make it

seem. Each occurrence of unexpected downtime has different variables, such as
what section of the user community is impacted, how long the downtime lasts,
what level of redundancy is in place to minimize the impact to the business’
productivity, etc.

All of the Oracle products I managed were very reliable, as outages were typically
caused by factors beyond its control, such as bad SQL queries or in-house
application code written without adequate error checking. The redundancy of the
Oracle RAC solution made patching much less intrusive to the business (for RAC
rolling patches) and multiple node processing, while certainly beneficial, I did not
believe we processed workloads with intense enough database I/O to outshine a
stand-alone installation by a huge amount.

As it were, very few of our outages were directly caused by a problem with one of
the Oracle products. We implemented Oracle RAC as primarily a redundancy
solution. Performance gain, and there certainly was some, came as a welcome
additional benefit.”

“We receive support from Oracle for both Oracle Linux and Oracle ERP. In terms of
technical support, I would rate this solution a six out of ten. The support process is
time-consuming as it involves several steps. We first contact them for an issue,
then they ask for some other sort of things like logs, after which they provide a
patch. Then, we need to take a clone of that and apply the patch. After that, we
need to test it out. Then, we again need to take time out for the protection services.
We then apply the patch on the protection, take the backups, and do a few other
things, which is overall a time-consuming job.”

What users had to say about valuable features:

“The most valuable feature of the solution is its stability. The tool's stability is
similar to CentOS. The project for CentOS is not functional as of now, a reason why
I moved to Fedora and Rocky Linux by another distributor.”

“We have a lot of PostgreSQL databases in our development work within our
organization. Many of the tools and packages we need for this are readily available
and easy to install and configure. The flexibility and availability of software
packages make our workflow faster and more adaptable. It provides extensive
community support and makes seeking recommendations, assistance, and access
to software and settings easy. This supportive community aspect significantly
simplifies our work in various environments, and it's something we greatly
appreciate as developers.”

“The UX design, the user front end, and the user GUI are very well done on the
GNOME and KDE platform side. It's very simple to work with, easy to learn, and
know where things are. I have worked with a lot of different solutions like Debian,
Ubuntu, Red Hat, and CentOS.

Rocky Linux is very easy, and if you switch from one to the other, you can easily
detect your tools in the front end. Since it is very similar to the file system
breakdown of downloads and documents, it's very easy to show users where things
will be.”

Pain Points
The main pain points mentioned:

“The solution's audio integration for virtual machines could be improved.”

Dominique Locksley
Linux System Administrator at Adapt IT

“One of the potential issues is that if you don't pay for support, you may
need to manage certain aspects on your own and rely on the community for
assistance.”

JohanWiklund

Managing Director at Midgard IT

“The solution's audio integration for virtual machines could be improved. It took
me almost a day to get my audio drivers to work while running it as a virtual
machine. I run Oracle Virtual Box. Within Oracle Virtual Box, I would really like it if
they looked at the audio integration or the audio driver specifically for virtual
machines.”

“In terms of improvement, Rocky Linux needs to clarify its identity and target
audience. While it is technically sound as a CentOS replacement, there is a
disconnect in its marketing messaging, which initially positioned it as an HPC
platform. It should define its core identity and audience more clearly.”

“Rocky Linux, being relatively new, initially lacked some of the software we were
accustomed to from CentOS 7. There were some missing components and changes
that required adjustment which is typical when transitioning between major

be minor challenges in finding information. One of the potential issues is that if

Setup
The setup process involves configuring and preparing the product or service for use, which may
include tasks such as installation, account creation, initial configuration, and troubleshooting any
issues that may arise. Below you can find real user quotes about the setup process.

“The product's installation, setup, and deployment are easy to manage.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model. My company also uses AWS,

Ubuntu versions, Amazon Linux versions, and Red Hat, so the images are used by
opting for a cloud provider.”

Linux Administrator at Magna International

“The setup is straightforward, with minimal manual intervention. Depending on

the customer's requirements, it is deployed on cloud-based systems or on-
premises hardware.

The deployment typically takes about an hour. Virtual machines can be set up in
this timeframe, with additional time needed for specific customer configurations.

I rate the process a nine and a half. ”

“The implementation process is relatively straightforward. We typically start by

cloning the repository, which contains various configurations and packages. Since
we have a considerable number of workstations, specifically around eighty, we find
this cloning approach to be efficient. Once the repository is cloned, the system can
be set up to automatically perform updates and package installations.”

Other Solutions Considered

“Our decision to use CentOS, and now its successor, Rocky Linux, was rooted in the
desire to stay close to the Red Hat ecosystem. We have continued this approach by
selecting distributions that are as similar as possible to RHEL. The aim is to ensure
that our development and testing process aligns with the standards of the industry
and our customer base. We want to maintain a consistent and reliable
development environment, which is why we choose distributions like Rocky Linux
or AlmaLinux.”

JohanWiklund Read full review

System Administrator at Maxar Technologies

“When evaluating a replacement for CentOS 7, we initially had to consider certain

specialized requirements before making a decision. Regarding the choice between
AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, both options were strong contenders due to their
close alignment with the CentOS path, which we were transitioning from. We
conducted testing and analysis on both AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. Initially, it
was challenging to determine which one to choose, but we opted for the
distribution that appeared to have a more significant user base and community
support. This decision is often crucial, especially in open-source environments, as
a larger user community can provide valuable assistance with development,
information sharing, and problem-solving.”
