Questions

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

JobMaster 4.10 - Basic
Electronics
• Our measuring devices fall into three basic categories:
1) Analog:
• Voltage, Current, (& Resistance)
2) Digital:
• Frequency (pulses)
3) Serial Data:
• RS-232, BHI LAN

• The cable for a nuclear densimeter has a special connector,

but it also has an analog voltage signal.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Analog: Voltage and Current
• In a fluid system we measure: PRESSURE and FLOW
RATE DISCHARGE TURBINE FLOW METER

SUCTION
PUMP

In an electrical system we measure:

ORIFICE
VOLTAGE and CURRENT.
PRESSURE ~ VOLTAGE

FLOW RATE ~ CURRENT

FRICTION ~ RESISTANCE AMMETER

Voltage is like a pressure forcing

BATTERY
electrons to move and current is the flow
of electrons moving in the wire. RESISTOR

Resistance is like friction restricting flow

in the circuit.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Analog: mA, Volts
• Analog signals may be any number between the
range of the analog device. For a 4-20 mA pressure
transducer, the output signal may be 4.22, 7.67, or
15.0 mA for example.
• Pressure transducers, temperature probes, and load
cells output analog signals (most are 4-20 mA).

Analog
Signal

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Digital: Pulses / Frequency

• Think of digital signals as either being “on or off”, “high or

low.” Analog signals may be any number between 4 to 20
mA for example. But, a digital signal is either a “1” or a “0”
and has no in-between.

• Powered Magnetic Pickups, Shaft Encoders, Quadrature

Encoders, Micromotion flowmeters, and some Barton
Computers output digital pulses.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Digital: Pulses / Frequency

• The pulses are basically a square wave voltage, but we are

interested in the frequency of the pulses (pulses/sec).

• The DAU measures the time between each pulse and also
counts the pulses (for depth applications).

Digital
Signal

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Serial Data: RS-232, BHI LAN

• Serial data is basically a stream of numbers separated by

commas.
• Sending and receiving devices need to agree upon a “protocol”
which includes a Start bit, Parity bit, Number of Bits to carry
data and Stop bits. The protocol is encoded in the program for
each device.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Serial Data: RS-232, BHI LAN
• Parity bits allow error checking - to make sure the information
being received is correct.
• We use serial data transfer:
To satellite data to HQ, to communicate between data van and
MCM’s, to send to the Overhead Display, and to send data to a
laptop running FracPro.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Serial Data

• The Isoplex gathers the signals from each connector, converts

them to digital data, and sends a block of information in the
form of RS-232 data.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

• Step 4: Isoplex relays data to JM and JM warns if any

Typical transfer formats
• BHI LAN - 38400, N, 8, 1
• Protocol is made up of the parity, data bits, and stop

that particular piece of equipment or monitoring
system.

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Terminology
• Baud rate
Typically 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, etc.
Number of bit transfers per second, the higher the #,
the faster the data is transmitted!!
• Data Bits
Measurement of actual data bits per transmission
Typical 5,7, or 8
• Stop Bits
Signals the end of the packet
Typically 1 or 2

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Terminology
• Parity
Simple form of error checking
Even (E), odd (O), marked (M), none (N)
• Handshaking
Not used with BHI equipment
• Data Packet
Start bit, data bits, parity bit, stop bit
Example: N, 8, 1 requires 11 bits
Start bit, 8 data bits, parity bit, 1 stop bit

Confidential. Not to be copied, distributed, or reproduced without prior approval.

Required Speed

• If a serial transmission consisted of 100 parameters

being sent with N,8,1 protocol. How fast would the
baud rate need to be to keep up if data is being sent
1 per second?

• Parameters usually average 6 characters and one

packet is needed for each character.
• 100 * 6 * 11 bits = 6600 bits
• Required baud rate 9600 bits/second
