Exercise 1
Consider a cubic specimen of 50 mm side dimension. This cube is subjected to a compressive
force of 125 KN along direction 2 (perpendicular to fibers direction).
1. The cube is not constrained in the space. Calculate the final dimensions of the specimen.
2. The cube is blocked along direction 3. Calculate the final dimensions of the cube.
3. The cube is blocked along direction 1. Write the law of behavior of the composite.
E1 = 155 GPa; E2 = 12.1 GPa; 23 = 0.458 ; 12 = 0.248
Exercise 2
Consider a laminate plate made from stacking of identical balanced woven fabric layers oriented
along C and T axes. A simple tensile stress 0x is applied along x as shown in the figure.
Moreover, two strain gages, one along x and the other along y, are cemented on the plate.
Gage 1 reads an axial strain 0x while gage 2 reads an axial strain 0y. Since layers are identical
and balanced, 0xy = 0.
1. Express the distortion CT in the plane (C,T) in terms of 0x and 0y.
2. Express the shear stress CT in the plane (C,T) in terms of 0x.
3. Deduce the expression of the shear modulus GCT in terms of 0x ; 0y and 0x.
Exercise 3
A 60° oriented carbon/epoxy lamina fibers is subjected to the following stress state:
x = 2K; y = -3K and xy = 4K where K is a real positive constant.
Knowing that Xt = 1500 MPa; Xc = -1500 MPa; Yt = 40 MPa; Yc = -246 MPa and S = 68 MPa,
determine the value of K using the maximum stress failure criterion.
Exercise 4
For the composite of exercise 3, determine the compliance matrix knowing that:
E1 = 181 GPa; E2 = E3 = 10.3 GPa; 12 = 0.27; 23 = 0.6; G12 = 7.17 GPa; G23 = 3 GPa.
Deduce the value of K using the maximum strain failure criterion.
Exercise 5
Repeat problem 3 using Tsai-Hill failure criterion.
Exercise 6
Lamina of exercise 3 is now subjected to a pure shear stress xy = 0. Determine 0 using:
1) Maximum stress failure criterion.
2) Tsai-Hill failure criterion.
