Content
The focus of Math 241 is vector calculus, which concerns functions of several variables and functions
whose values are vectors rather than just numbers. In this broader context, we will revisit notions like
https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648 1/9
8/28/24, 10:06 AM Fall 2024-MATH 241-Calculus III-Sections DL1, DL2

continuity, derivatives, and integrals, as well as their applications (such as finding minima and maxima).
We’ll explore new geometric objects such as vector fields, curves, and surfaces in 3-space and study
how these relate to differentiation and integration. The highlight of the course are four related theorems
which relate seemingly different types of integrals in unexpected ways: The fundamental theorem of
line integrals, Green's theorem, Stoke's theorem, and the divergence theorem.

One of our goals for the semester is to provide you with problem solving tools. We cover a large number
of distinct, but interrelated, concepts in Calc III (more than in previous calculus classes). In this context,
conceptual understanding plays a critical role in the problem solving process. Throughout the course, I
and our TAs will help you develop a solid understanding of vector calculus so that you can solve any
such problem you encounter in mathematics, the sciences, or engineering.

Textbook
We will cover Chapters 12–16 of

James Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 9th edition ebook & online homework

Purchasing the ebook also gives you access to Webassign, which is need to complete the homework.
For complete information on purchasing options for both see http://go.illinois.edu/Calculus
(http://go.illinois.edu/Calculus) . If you have the standard text and WebAssign package from Math 220,
221, or 231 from last year, then you already have everything you need for this course. If not, you
probably only need the single-semester package. If you aren't ready to purchase WebAssign, you can
use it without charge for the first two weeks of class and so not miss any homework assignments.

Course Policies
Overall grade: Your course grade will be based on the online HW (13%), section worksheets (10%),
three midterm exams (your three highest midterms will each count for 14%; your lowest score only
counts 7%), and a comprehensive final exam (28%). Additionally, Iclicker represents up to 2% of your
grade; see more details below.

Grade cutoffs on any component will never be stricter than 90% for an A- grade, 80% for a B-, and so
on. Individual exams may have grade cutoffs set more generously depending on their difficulty.

Exams: There will be four evening midterm exams, which will be held from 6:45–8:00pm.
Midterm 1 (https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648/pages/midterm-1-information) : Tuesday, October
1.
Midterm 2 (https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648/pages/midterm-2-information) : Tuesday, October
22.
Midterm 3: (https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648/pages/midterm-3-information) Tuesday,
November 19.
https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648 2/9
8/28/24, 10:06 AM Fall 2024-MATH 241-Calculus III-Sections DL1, DL2

Midterm 4 (https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648/pages/midterm-4-information) : Tuesday,

December 10.

There will be a combined final for Math 241. We will let you know the date when the office of the
registrar schedules it, hopefully on October 16. Until then, please don't plan to leave town before Friday,
December 20, when the final exam period is over.

All exams will be closed book and notes, and no calculators or other electronic devices (e.g. cell phones)
will be permitted; where indicated, all work must be shown to receive any credit on a problem.

Conflict exams: A conflict exam is provided for students who need it. To take the conflict, you should fill
out the conflict request form at least one week before the exam. (Links will be provided on the exam info
pages.) To see if your situation qualifies you to take the conflict exam, consult the university policy
on evening midterm exams (http://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part2/3-202) and final exam
conflicts (http://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part2/3-201) . Please ask me if you aren't clear if you
qualify.

Missed exams: Except in extraordinary cases, there will be no make-up exams. Rather, in the event of
a valid illness, accident, or family crisis long enough to prevent you from taking the exam or the conflict
exam, you can be excused from an exam so that it does not count toward your overall average. All
such requests should be made to me in advance if possible, but in any event no more than one
week after the exam date.

Homework: Homework will be assigned for each lecture, and will generally be due at 1:00am in the
morning before the lecture after the next lecture. That is, HW based on Monday’s lecture is due
Thursday night/Friday morning at 1:00am, and Wednesday’s is due Sunday night/Monday morning at
1:00 am, etc. The homework will be completed online via Webassign. To access WebAssign, follow the
instruction at:

https://www.cengage.com/coursepages/UIUC_Calculus_Moodle_or_Canvas1
(https://www.cengage.com/coursepages/UIUC_Calculus_Moodle_or_Canvas1)

For technical problems or problems registering, e-mail [email protected];

(mailto:[email protected])
alternatively, attend the Webassign office hours described here
(https://www.cengage.com/coursepages/UIUC_Calculus_Moodle_or_Canvas1) .

Regrading: Contact the grader, Fulton Jackson, if you feel that Webassign grades are incorrect.

Worksheets: Once a week, during discussion sections, students will collaborate on worksheets,
guided by their TA. These are graded on participation and effort, and count for 10% of your grade.

Missed HW and worksheets: Please contact the TA of your Tuesday/Thursday section if you have an
excused absence for either your HW or worksheet grades. They are responsible for granting extensions

https://canvas.illinois.edu/courses/47648 3/9
8/28/24, 10:06 AM Fall 2024-MATH 241-Calculus III-Sections DL1, DL2

and/or excused grades.

Iclicker: There will be Iclicker questions in class daily. You can use either the student remote or the
app. To register, please follow the instructions on this link.
(https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/page.php?id=120820) Make sure you register for the correct class:
DL1 and DL2 have different Iclicker. Depending on how many you answer, and whether you answer
correctly, up to 2% of your original grade will be replaced by 100%. More precisely, your final grade is
(100%-X%)(original grade) + X%, where X% is at most 2%. The lowest 2 Iclicker scores will be dropped
but I generally do not give excused absences, since it is essentially a form of extra credit. (Note that
Wednesday, August 28 is an optional "bonus" day.)

Large-lecture Etiquette: Please be as considerate as possible to the other students in the lecture. Try
to arrive on time, remember to turn off your cell phone, refrain from talking, don't pack up your stuff up
until the bell has rung, etc.

Cheating: Cheating is taken very seriously as it takes unfair advantage of the other students in the
class, and is handled as per Article 1 Part 4 of the student code.
(http://studentcode.illinois.edu/article1/part4/1-401) Penalties for cheating on exams, in particular, are
very high, typically resulting in a 0 on the exam or an F in the class.

Disabilities: Students with disabilities who require accommodations should upload their letter
from DRES (http://www.disability.uiuc.edu/) using the Math 241 DRES accommodation form
(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf9nXCvGm2ULS-
w77Q1TK2UoIj0DTWozLxpYrHc7eZlIE91Dw/viewform?usp=sf_link) . (For this, you need to enable
GoogleApps@Illinois. (https://help.uillinois.edu/TDClient/42/UIUC/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=135) If you
are using Chrome, you must be logged into your university account, or in incognito mode.) Note that any
accommodation on exams must be requested at least a week in advance.

Sources of help:
Ask questions in class: This applies to both the main lecture and the sections. The lecture may be
large, but I still strongly encourage you to ask questions there. If you’re confused about something, then
several dozen other people are as well.

The Math 241 tutoring room: Come and work with the TAs and your classmates on homework, test
preparation, and any general questions about Math 241 on any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or
Thursday from 4pm–8pm in 147 Altgeld Hall. The tutoring room will be staffed starting Tuesday, August
27.

Campuswire: This (free) online discussion forum is another place to go to get your questions answered
by your classmates, TAs, and Math 241 lecturers. Join the Campuswire for all sections of Math 241
(including DL1 and DL2) here. (https://campuswire.com/p/G3F9E4EE3) (Use the code 0782)

8/28/24, 10:06 AM Fall 2024-MATH 241-Calculus III-Sections DL1, DL2

Come to office hours: I encourage students to come talk to me about course content, logistical issues,
or any cool mathematics. Feel free to come even if you can't formulate specific questions, we can try to
figure those out together. Once I have learned what times work best for students, I will schedule regular
office hours in my office 234 Computer Application Building. Until then, just ask and we'll figure out a
time to talk.

Strategies for success

Take care of your emotional, physical, and mental health.

Set aside a specific, distraction-free time for course work.

Use active learning strategies: work out examples, make connections between topics, track
where you have difficulties.

Be fully present in class. Take notes, but don’t let this distract you from thinking critically about the
content. Gaps in your notes can be filled in later from a friend or from the provided lecture notes.

Ask for help when you need it. Ask questions during class or in our course discussion forum, visit
my office hours and the Math 241 Tutoring room, and participate in a study group.

Student Learning Outcomes

After you successfully complete the course you will be able to:

Understand and use vectors in two and three dimensions;

Analyze vector functions;

Optimize in several variables;

Evaluate integrals of several variable functions;

Integrate vector functions; and

Apply integral theorems from vector calculus.

Here is a more detailed day-by-day list of objectives.
