Column Design

Background:
Due to unavailability of column interaction diagram for Fy=72.5 ksi and F'c=5ksi. we
had to use the interaction diagram excel file provided by American Concrete Institue
(ACI). The inputs given in the file willbe shown as snapshots. The file directly
creates interaction diagram for Pu and Mu, instead of creating for Kn and Rn The
obtained values from the graph wil be used to verify the column suitability for the
certain case.

Figure 1: Column cross section and marked governing Pu, Mu-2 and Mu-3

Changes were made in the excel input in accordance to moment direction and
interaction diagram was generated. Then value of corresponding moment's Pu was
taken from the diagram for both moment cases. This value is ultimately analyzed in
reciprocal method and compared with Design Pu=516.2 kip.

Result analysis
For governing Mu-3=225.4 kip-ft, from the graph,
Pu-3= 1010 kip
For governing Mu-2=41,4 kip-ft, from the graph,
Pu-3= 1040.7 kip

Reciprocal analysis,
(Pu-3)1+(Pu-2)1)1 >= Pu
=(1010)1+(1040.7)}1}1 >=516.3
=512.6 ~516.3, it can be considered Oh

Also, concentric compression capacity from the graph can be seen to be

1040.6 ip>> 516kip. This means the column is in concentric compression as
well.

Further verification of Int. diagrams:

Afurther verification of the interaction diagrams was conducted by comparing it with
the interaction diagram generated by ETABS. It can be seen that the obtained values
of Pu-2, Pu-3 are really close with that of obtained from ACI's excel. So, it can be
said that the column is suitable for the design moment and compression.
