PHASES OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE

 A change in the level of anterior pituitary hormone

and ovarian hormone induces changes in ovary and
uterus in different phases

MENSTRUAL CYCLE CAN BE DIVIDED INTO 4 PHASES

1.Menstrual/Bleeding Phase
2.Follicular/Proliferative Phase
3.Ovulation Phase
4.Luteal/Secretory Phase

DURATION OF MENSTRUAL PHASES

 The Duration Of Menstrual Cycle Is 28 Days

 Cycle Can Range Anywhere From 21 To 35 Days
 The Range For The Early Teens Range Between
21 To 45 Days
PHASES OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE AVERAGE START AND END DAY
MENSTRUAL PHASE  1-4
PROLIFERATIVE PHASE  5-13
OVULATION PHASE  13-16
SECRETORY PHASE  16-28
MENSTRUAL PHASE
Menstruation bleeding ,menses ,periods discharge of
bloody fluid containing endometrial cells ,glandular
secretions and blood vessel. Due to breakdown of
endometrial lining of uterus and its blood vessel result of
previous menstrual cycle. Due to strong vasoconstriction
and photolytic activity ,functional stratum of endometrial
tissue dies and is discharged during menstrual bleeding.
It lasts for 3-5 days

FOLLICULAR PHASE
Due to rise of follicle stimulating hormones during the
first day of the cycle, several ovarian follicles are
stimulated. follicle competes with each other for
development follicle , matures into Graffian follicle.as
they matures, the follicle secrets increasing amount of
estrogen which thickens the new functional layer of
endometrial in the uterus.at the end of this phase,
ovulation occurs.
OVULATION PHASE
Ovulation is a phase of menstrual cycle when your
ovary release an egg [ovum].once a egg leaves ovary
it travels down to fallopian tube where it waits to be
fertilised by sperm. on an average ,it happens on day
14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle.

LUTEAL PHASE
Graffian follicle transform as corpus luteum. the luteal
phase is latter phase of the menstrual cycle.it begins with
the formation of the corpus luteum and ends in
pregnancy. corpus luteum secretes significant amount of
progesterone, which plays a vital role. the two opposite
of the luteal phase, the rest of the two weeks is called
the follicular phase
HORMONE LEVEL DURING DIFFERENT PHASES

SIGNS OF MENSTRUATION
A woman may experience these symptoms:-
 FLUID RETENTION
 CRAMPING
 CONSTIPATION
 MOOD SWINGS
 WEIGHT GAIN
 BREAST TENDERNESS
 DIRRAHOEA
MENARCHE AND MENOPAUSE
 MENARCHE
A women’s first menstruation
Typically occur around age 12
Occurrence depends on the overall health and diet

 MENOPAUSE
End of women’s reproductive phase
Commonly occur between age 45 and 55
Age of menopause is largely the result of genetics

MENSTRUAL CYCLE DISORDER

Dysmennorhea :-Painful menstrual cramps
Premenstrual syndrome:-Physical and psychological symptoms
that occurs before menstruation
Metrorrhagea:- Bleeding between expected menstrual period
Amenorrhea:-Absence of menstruation
Oligomennorhea:-infrequent menstrual period
MENSTRUAL TABOO
In India even mere mention of the topic has been a taboo in the
past and even to this date the cultural and social influences
appear to be a hurdle for advancement of knowledge on the
subject. culturally in many parts of India, menstruation is still
considered to be dirty and impure. The origin of this myth dates
back to the Vedic times and is often been linked to indra’s
slaying of Vritra’s for it has been declared in veda that guilt,
killing a Brahmana-murder, appears every month as menstrual
flow as women had taken upon themselves a part of indra’s
guilt.
