Micro Project - SMA

Subject:
Preparation of a 2D Drawing Based on an Existing Component from
Industry

Objective
To enhance drawing skills by collecting an existing drawing from a nearby
industry or workshop and preparing a detailed 2D technical drawing of the
component.

Steps to Complete the Project

1. Selection of Component
 Visit a nearby industry or workshop.
 Observe and select a mechanical component of interest (e.g., a
bracket, lever, or housing).
 Request permission to collect the original drawing or take
measurements of the component.

2. Gather Information
 Obtain the following details:
o Dimensions (length, width, height, diameters)
o Material specifications
o Tolerances and finishes
o Assembly instructions, if applicable

3. Sketching the Component

 Create rough sketches of the component from different angles
(front, top, side views).
 Note critical dimensions and features during this process.

4. Creating the 2D Drawing

 Use drawing software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) or hand-draw the
2D technical drawing based on your sketches and measurements.
 Include:
o Views: Front, top, side, and isometric views as necessary.
o Dimensions: Clearly label all dimensions, including
tolerances.
o Annotations: Add notes for materials, finishes, and any
special instructions.

5. Finalizing the Drawing

 Review the drawing for accuracy.
 Ensure it is neatly presented, with appropriate line weights and
styles.
 Include a title block with:
o Project Title
o Student Name
o Course Name
o Date
o Scale

Example Components to Consider

 Brackets: Common in various machinery; often has simple
geometries.
 Housings: Used for motor or gear assemblies; may have more
complex features.
 Levers or Handles: Useful for understanding basic mechanical
operations.
Safety and Ethical Considerations
 Ensure you have permission to take measurements or photographs
of the component.
 Respect proprietary designs and avoid sharing sensitive information.

Conclusion
This micro project will develop your technical drawing skills and deepen
your understanding of mechanical components. By translating an existing
design into a 2D drawing, you will enhance your practical knowledge
applicable in mechanical engineering.

Submission
Prepare a final report including:
 A copy of the original drawing or photographs of the component.
 The finalized 2D drawing.
 A brief description of the component, its function, and any
challenges faced during the project.
