Clean water supplies are essential for good health and cleanliness in the home.
Often, the only sources of drinking water is polluted. More than 70 percent of rural
households have no safe drinking water. Their supplies are often carrier some
distance from a river, pond of well, or a community pump or tap. Carrying water
takes time and energy. For these reasons, water is often kept in the house for a
long time and, if necessary, it is rationed carefully.
Sever diseases are spread by polluted water. These include diarrhoea, cholera and
typhoid. Families using water from uncovered ponds of wells are likely to suffer
more frequently from all these infections than those whose water comes from

protected sites. An adequate supply of water is also needed for personal
cleanliness and general hygiene in the home. Health workers should encourage the
provision of good household eater supplies as much as possible.
If there is no tap, the main water container in the house must be kept clean,
covered and free from debris. Overnight storage in earthenware vessels reduces
the number of bacteria in the water. Nevertheless, it is important that any water
given to infants is first boiled. After boiling it should be left covered in the same
container until it is cool enough to drink.

Objective: To Study the effect of indicator in acid base and neutral substance
Material Required: Onion, Washing powder, lemon, plastic bag.
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to perform and observe the effect of
olfactory indicators.

Activity:
Take a small amount of finely chopped onions along with some strips of clean
cloth in a plastic bag. Tie up the bag tightly and leave it as such in a refrigerator
for a night. In the morning, take two of these strips and check their odour. Now
put a few drops of lemon juice on one strip and a few drops of washing powder
solution on the other.

Rinse both the cloth strips with water and again check their odour and note
down in your notebook. You will see that onion will give different odour with
lemon juice and washing powder you can repeat the activity by taking dilute
vanilla essence. Smell dilute vanilla essence. Write your observation and
conclusion of the effect of indicator in your worksheet notebook.

Case study
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals are components of food.
These components of food are called nutrients and are necessary for our body.
All living organisms require food. Plants can synthesise food for themselves but
animals including humans cannot. They get it from plants or animals that eat
plants. Thus, humans and animals are directly or indirectly dependent on plants.
Plants are the only organisms that can prepare food for themselves by using
water, carbon dioxide and minerals. The raw materials are present in their
surroundings. The nutrients enable living organisms to build their bodies, to
grow, to repair damaged parts of their bodies and provide the energy to carry
out life processes. Nutrition is the mode of taking food by an organism and its
utilization by the body.
The mode of nutrition in which organisms make food themselves from simple
substances is called autotrophic (auto = self; trophos= nourishment) nutrition.
Therefore, plants are called autotrophs. Animals and most other organisms take
in food prepared by plants. They are called heterotrophs (heteros = other).

Case study
In the United States of America, the African–Americans whose ancestors were the
slaves who were brought over from Africa continue to describe their lives today as
largely unequal. This, despite the fact that there was a movement in the late 1950s
to push for equal rights for African–Americans. Prior to this, African–Americans
were treated extremely unequally in the United States and denied equality
through law. For example, when travelling by bus, they either had to sit at the back
of the bus or get up from their seat whenever a white person wished to sit. Rosa
Parks (1913–2005) was an African–American woman. Tired from a long day at work
she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man on 1 December 1955. Her
refusal that day started a huge agitation against the unequal ways in which
African–Americans were treated and which came to be known as the Civil Rights
Movement. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination on the basis of
race, religion or national origin. It also stated that all schools would be open to
African–American children and that they would no longer have to attendseparate
schools specially set up for them. However, despite this, a majority of African–
Americans continue to be among the poorest in the country. Most African-
American children can only afford to attend government schools that have fewer
facilities and poorly qualified teachers as compared to white students who either
go to private schools or live in areas where the government schools are as highly
rated as private schools.

A computer number format is the internal representation of numeric values in
digital device hardware and software, such as in
programmable computers and calculators. Numerical values are stored as
groupings of bits, such as bytes and words. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-
1716) is the self-proclaimed inventor of the binary system. There are various
types of number systems in computer. The four most common number system
types are: Decimal number system, Binary number system, octal number system,
Hexadecimal number system. Binary number system. Computers represent data
in sets of binary digits. The representation is composed of bits, which in turn are
grouped into larger sets such as bytes. Octal and hexadecimal number display
binary quantities are written with a base, octal decimal number system, in
computer 10 as the base and requiring 10 different numerals, the digits 0, 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. It also requires a dot (decimal point) to represent decimal
fractions. The hexadecimal number system is a type of number system that has a
base value equal to 16. It is also pronounced sometimes as 'hex'. Hexadecimal
numbers are represented by only 16 symbols. These symbols or values are 0, 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E and F.
