QUESTION TAGS .

( 6em, 5em, 4em et 3em)

*With auxiliaries (to be and to have)

Presentation

- The trousers are green, aren’t they?

- Koffi has a white shirt, hasn’t he?

NB: We say “The trousers are green” and “Koffi has a white shirt” are the main sentences.

“aren’t they?” and “hasn’t he?” are Tag questions.

• The verbs in the main sentences are “are” and “has”. They are auxiliaries “to be” and “to
have” in simple present affirmative form.
• In the tag questions ,we have the same auxiliaries in negative form. So:
-Question tags always use auxiliaries in the tense of the main sentence.
-When the auxiliary is in affirmative, question tag is in negative form and when the auxiliary
is in negative, question tag is in affirmative form
-Question tag uses the personal pronoun of the subject in the sentence.
Example:
She is in the class, isn’t she?
Afi isn’t at home, is she?
We have black shoes, haven’t we?
Koffi and Yawa haven’t black shoes, have they?

2-Afi hasn’t any pens,___________?

7-He isn’t a school girl,_____________?
8- You are eating a stew,_____________?

EXCEPTION:
I am a school boy, aren’t I?

QUESTION TAGS : With modals or defective verbs

Presentation:

Glbert and Sunday could play well, couldn’t they?

Tunde must take a small calabash, mustn’t she?
NB-Question tag always uses the auxiliary or modal of the main sentence either in negative
or affirmative according to the form of the verb in the main sentence.

PRACTICE:

Put the appropriate question tag in the following sentences

1- Joe should not take another wife,_____________?

2- The old man was against the young man,__________?

*With regular and irregular verbs.

Presentation

-Koffi learnt his lesson yesterday, didn’t he?

-Gilbert plays football well, doesn’t he?

-I didn’t revise my lessons, did I?

NB: Consider the first two sentences. The verbs there are “learnt”(simple past, affirmative)
“plays”(simple present, affirmative). Their tag questions are respectively “didn’t he?”(past
tense of “to do” in negative form) “doesn’t he?” (simple present of “to do” in negative form).

SO: When the verb in the main sentence is neither auxiliary nor modal, we use the modal
verb “to do” in the tense of the verb in the main sentence in negative form.

5-An air-hostess travelled a lot,___________?

*Question tag with: None, no one, nobody, anyone, nothing, hardly etc…….

PRESENTATION

-None of the friends liked the film, did they?

-He hardly speaks English, does he?

NB- Here the negation lies on the subject not on the verb in the main sentence. That is why
the tag question is in affirmative.

Example:

- Nobody comes, do they?

- Nothing was said, was it?
• Question tag with: Everybody, everyone, somebody, someone etc……
- Everyone warned you, didn’t they?
- Someone had recognized him, hadn’t they?
NB – When the subject of the sentence is: no one, nobody, anyone, anybody, none,
everybody, everyone, somebody, someone etc……, we use the pronoun “they” for the tag
question.

1- None of the bottles are broken,_____________?
