Understanding Values and Identity

“Literature is a mirror of life”

– Vina Woolf

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing this module, you are expected to :

a. Analyze Anglo-American literary texts, specifically poetry, prose, and drama, as expressions of
individual or communal values within.

b. Students will apply their understanding to create an original multimodal literary text, a one-act play,
that reflects their expanding cultural identity.

INTRODUCTION
Discuss the historical and cultural context of Anglo-American literature.
Introduce key literary terms and concepts related to poetry, prose, and drama.

ACTIVITY ( pre-test)-Literary Values Reflection

Distribute a set of excerpts from Anglo-American literary texts to each student.

Ask students to read the excerpts individually and reflect on the values they perceive
within the texts.

“The Catcher and the Rye” D. J Salinger

Provide guiding questions such as:

1.What values do you think are portrayed in the excerpt?
2.How do these values reflect the cultural identity of the author?
3.Are there any conflicting values present in the text?
ANALYSIS

-Facilitate a group discussion where students share their interpretations of the texts.
- Encourage critical thinking by asking questions about the cultural context, author's
background, and intended audience.
- Guide students to recognize how individual and communal values are reflected in the
literature.

1. Identify at least three areas for improvement based on what you’ve learned—
consider
structure, tone, and content on the provided letter below.
2. Rewire the letter to showcase your superhero communication skills, making it
impactful and
compelling.
3. Justify your changes. Explain why each modification enhances the overall
effectiveness of the letter.
ABSTRACTION

-Help students abstract key themes and cultural elements from the literature.
- Discuss how literature serves as a reflection of society and contributes to cultural identity formation.
- Encourage students to explore their own cultural identities and how they intersect with the themes
presented in the literature.

3. Content Relevance:
- Including only relevant details ensures that your letter remains focused and impactful.
- Highlight experiences and skills that directly align with the job requirements.
Example: Instead of listing all past experiences, selectively mention those that
demonstrate your qualifications for the specific position.

4. Strategic Language Use:

-Choosing language that is clear, concise, and tailored to your audience ensures that
your message is understood and leaves a positive impression.
Example: Instead of using jargon or overly complex language, opt for straightforward
and professional language that conveys your points effectively.

5. Individualization for Target Audience:

-Personalizing your letter to the specific employer demonstrates genuine interest and
shows that you’ve done your research. Tailor your content to match the company’s
values and needs.
Example: Mention specific projects or initiatives the company is involved in and explain
how your skills align with their goals.

6. Visual Appeal
- Visual elements such as formatting and font choice contribute to the overall
professionalism and readability of your letter. Consistency in formatting and a clean
layout enhance the visual appeal.
- Example: Use a professional font such as Arial or Times New Roman and ensure proper
spacing and alignment throughout the letter.

7. Adaptability to Various Contexts

- Being able to adapt your communication style to different professional contexts
demonstrates versatility and adaptability. Customize your approach based on the nature
of the job and industry.
- Example: Tailor your language and tone differently for a creative position versus a
more traditional corporate role.

8. Reflection on Iterative Improvement

- Recognizing the iterative nature of writing allows for continuous improvement.
Reflecting on feedback and self-assessment helps refine your communication skills over
time.
- Example: Review and revise your letter based on feedback received from peers or
mentors, aiming to strengthen areas of weakness and further polish your writing.

By understanding and applying these aspects, you can craft a compelling letter of
application that effectively communicates your qualifications and enthusiasm for the
position. These examples illustrate how each element contributes to the overall
effectiveness of your communication.
