1. Scope: This procedure is for earth testing SOP


2. Responsibility: Maintenance team

3. Instructions: Procedure for measuring the electrical earth

3.1 Earth [Earth pit] should be tested with all safety precautions

Electrical hand gloves, insulated tools, safety shoes, safety helmet.

3.2 A calibrated earth megger should be used

3.3 The test spikes[rod] should length of 12x1.5 feet.

3.4 Testing wire should be minimum 15 metres and 30 meters length [wire size multistands copper wire 2.5 mm2 .

3.5 First remove the earth pit cover [concrete slab, MS plate]

3.6 Remove the connected wire or GI flat from the earth pit electrode.

3.7 Auxiliary earth spikes inserted in the ground [15 metres and 30 meters away from earth electrode]

3.8 From electrode remove the damaged nut, bolts and washers and use new GI bolts, nuts and washers, size
minimum 10 to 12 mm.

3.9 IEEE STD. 80-1986 the ground resistance in case of distribution substation shall be within limit of 5Ω whereas for
transmission substation the same shall be with in limit of 1Ω.

3.10 Earth pit testing should be done every three months and values written in the register.
