Assignment 2

Ques.1 A 230 V, dc shunt motor is taking 5A when running at no load. The

armature resistance (including brushes) is 0.2 ohms and field circuit resistance is
115 ohms. For an input current of 72 A, calculate the shaft output and efficiency.
Also calculate the armature current at which the efficiency is maximum.

Ques.2 A 600V dc shunt motor drives a 60kW load at 1000rpm. The field
resistance is 100 ohms and armature resistance is 0.15 ohms. Stray load loss is
negligible. In case motor efficiency is 85%, determine

A. The rotational losses

B. The speed at no load and speed regulation.

Ques.3 A Dc shunt motor, when fed from 200 V dc source, delivers full load
torque to a load at 1000 rpm. Its supply voltage is reduced to 100 V, speed
becomes 800 rpm with load torque remaining constant. Calculate the armature
voltage drops at rated torque. Assume no magnetic saturation.

Ques. 4 A dc shunt motor runs at 750 rpm from 250 V supply and taking a full
load line current of 60 A. its armature and field resistance are 0.4 and 125 ohms
respectively.

Assuming 2 V brush drop and negligible armature reaction effect, calculate

I. The no load speed for a no load line current of 6 amp.

II. The resistance to be added in series with armature circuit to reduce the full
load speed to 600 rpm.
III. The percentage reduction in flux per pole needed, in order that speed may be
900 rpm when the armature current is 30 A, with no added resistance in
armature circuit.
