Lower Bound & Upper Bound

Question 1
Violet and Wilfred recorded their times to run 200m, correct to
the nearest second.
Violet took 36 seconds and Wilfred took 39 seconds.
Work out the upper bound of the difference between their times.
𝑇𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑 → 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠

𝑉𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑡𝐿𝐵 = 36 − 0.5 = 35.5

𝑉𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑡𝑈𝐵 = 36 + 0.5 = 36.5
𝑊𝑖𝑙𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑑𝐿𝐵 = 39 − 0.5 = 38.5
𝑊𝑖𝑙𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑈𝐵 = 39 + 0.5 = 39.5

𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑈𝐵 = 𝑊𝑖𝑙𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑈𝐵 − 𝑉𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑡𝐿𝐵

= 39.5 − 35.5
= 4 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠
Question 2

Pasta is sold in packets with width 11.5 𝑐𝑚, correct to the nearest
0.5 𝑐𝑚.
A shop places these packets in a single line on a shelf of length
2 𝑚, correct to the nearest 0.1 𝑚.
Find the maximum number of these packets that will fit along this
shelf.
You must show all your working.
𝑃𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑎 = 0.5 ÷ 2 → 0.25 𝑐𝑚
𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑓 = 10 ÷ 2 → 5 𝑐𝑚

𝑃𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑎𝐿𝐵 = 11.5 − 0.25 = 11.25 𝑐𝑚

𝑃𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑈𝐵 = 11.5 + 0.25 = 11.75 𝑐𝑚
𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑓𝐿𝐵 = 200 + 5 = 205 𝑐𝑚
𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑓𝑈𝐵 = 200 − 5 = 195 𝑐𝑚

Question 3
Neha has a piece of ribbon of length 23 𝑐𝑚, correct to the nearest
𝑐𝑚. From this ribbon she cuts off a piece with length 87 𝑚𝑚,
correct to the nearest 𝑚𝑚.
Work out the lower bound and upper bound for the length of the
remaining ribbon.
Give your answer in centimetres.

𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑏𝑜𝑛 → 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 𝑐𝑚
𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒 → 0.1 ÷ 2 = 0.05 𝑐𝑚

𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑏𝑜𝑛𝐿𝐵 = 23 − 0.5 = 22.5 𝑐𝑚

𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑏𝑜𝑛𝑈𝐵 = 23 + 0.5 = 23.5 𝑐𝑚
𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝐿𝐵 = 8.7 − 0.05 = 8.65 𝑐𝑚
𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑈𝐵 = 8.7 + 0.05 = 8.75 𝑐𝑚

𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑈𝐵 = 𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑏𝑜𝑛𝑈𝐵 − 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝐿𝐵

→ 23.5 − 8.65 = 14.85 𝑐𝑚
𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐿𝐵 = 𝑅𝑖𝑏𝑏𝑜𝑛𝐿𝐵 − 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑈𝐵
→ 22.5 − 8.75 = 13.75 𝑐𝑚
Question 4
A bus travels 440 𝑘𝑚, correct to the nearest 10 𝑘𝑚.
The time taken to complete the journey is 6 hours, correct to the
nearest half hour.
Calculate the lower bound of the speed of the bus.
𝐵𝑢𝑠 → 10 ÷ 2 = 5 𝑘𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 → 0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25 ℎ

𝐵𝑢𝑠𝐿𝐵 = 440 − 5 = 435 𝑘𝑚

𝐵𝑢𝑠𝑈𝐵 = 440 + 5 = 445 𝑘𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒𝐿𝐵 = 6 − 0.25 = 5.75 ℎ
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑈𝐵 = 6 + 0.25 = 6.25 ℎ
