CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

There are various factors that cause the increasing number of mediating
effects of active procrastination and passive procrastination on the
relationship between academic stress and academic activities in the
Philippines most specifically in private schools like Liceo de Davao. Few to
mention are the less attention of parent involvement in child’s learning,
and letting their children to spend much time in social media rather than
their academic things. To some point of view, these problems are also the
basic and common problems to those finest students who experience this
from time to time and but of course to those students who struggle with
time management on a daily basis don't reap many benefits.

This is a survey on the students' academic performance. However, we

have not come across a study that specifically discuss the Academic
Stress: Procrastination in Academic Activities among Liceo De Davao
Weekend class Students. Furthermore, this study will provide relevant
concepts that would possibly create understanding on why some students
experience this kind of issue in the academic community.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to know what are the reasons why a
student of Liceo de Davao particularly in Weekend class program
procrastinates and how it affects their academic activities.

To answer the study's problem, the researchers seek information

based on the following questions.

What is the experience of students who procrastinate and are under

academic stress?

How did students cope with the situation of being engaged in

procrastination and academic stress?

Why student procrastinates even if given a certain amount of time to

complete the activities?

Significance of the Study

This phenomenological study, I am confident that we will contribute

to the importance and significance of avoiding academic stress. Through
this research, We were able to learn more about students who struggle
with procrastination, which contributes to academic stress, as well as the
various issues they faced when studying. Furthermore, this knowledge
would assist parents in achieving the objective of providing a high-quality
education for their children.

As a result, our research offers a planned and strategic approach to

supporting healthy and high-quality education in our country. Finally, this
study may be useful to future researchers who want to undertake research
on academic stress, such as procrastination and time management. It will
assist them in identifying areas of students in private schools that require
further investigation and study.

Scope and Delimitation

This phenological study is delimited, with the goal of learning about

students' procrastination experiences, coping strategies, and ideas that
they can share with their peers. We chose thirty (30) individuals, both
male and female of Liceo de Davao Weekend class students for this
quantitative research study, which began in October 6, 2024.

However, We are aware of the flaws that may prevent this research
from achieving the intended generalizability. Because of the small number
of people who took part in the study, the results cannot be generalized
and cannot sufficiently support assertions that meaningful conclusions
were reached.

Definition of Terms

Procrastination- The act of postponing a task that can be done

immediately.

Productivity- Refers to the student’s ability to product a certain work.

Academic stress- Defined as the body's response to academic-related

demands that exceed adaptive capabilities of students.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

The Temporal Motivation Theory is the most valid theory of

procrastination today because it incorporates the self-regulatory and self-
efficacy theories and accounts for task aversiveness and the hyperbolic
discounting of time. Students' academic life satisfaction may be
influenced by their level of procrastination. Procrastination is the act of
delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline.
Some researchers define procrastination as a "form of self-regulation
failure characterized by the irrational delay of tasks despite potentially
negative consequences (Kendra Cherry, 2008). Academic life satisfaction
is operationally defined as the expected satisfaction in one's life in school
by the fulfillment of his/her important academic goals or aspirations
(Kumar & Dileep, 2006, p1). Unfortunately, this procrastination can have a
serious impact on a number of life areas, including a person's mental
health, academic problems and social well-being. (Kendra Cherry, 2008).

In respect to the relationship between procrastination and life

satisfaction, we found that students who scored high in procrastination are
significantly less satisfied with their life than the students who scored low
in procrastination (Durden 1997). Students have the ability to choose and
direct their own actions. The ability to self-direct learning depends on
motivation set by a student’s internal standards and self-evaluative
reactions to actions (Bandura, 1986). Students are able to manage their
thoughts and actions in order to reach specific outcomes such as
improved academic performance (Schunk, 2001). Social cognitive theory
explains that student learning occurs through an interaction of behavior,
cognitive factors, and the environment.

The figure below illustrates the conceptual framework of the study.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES + PROCRASTINATION=

ACADEMIC STRESS

Figure 1. The Conceptual Framework of the Study.

This study's conceptual framework took into consideration how

academic activities and having a procrastinating attitude, which is the
study's independent variable. This type of problem can cause academic
stress, which can negatively impact their mental health and academic
performance as High School Students, and this is the study's dependent
variable.

Hypothesis

This study conducted last October, 2024 is an investigation into why

some students particularly Liceo de Davao Weekend class Students
procrastinates in their school activities.

Additionally, to provide them with some advice on how to avoid

procrastination. If then, students of Liceo de Davao including their parents
can gain more knowledge.
Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
After conducting a thorough and in-depth research, the researchers
present the Review of Related Literature and studies in this chapter. This
will also aid in comprehending the research and, finally, the definition of
terminology for a better understanding of the study. This article is about
students who, for various reasons, were unable to complete their activities
on time.

Procrastination is human behavior of delaying tasks, job and/ or actions

for whatever reason for later time. Apparently, it is a way of concealing up
anxiety connected with starting up or finishing the task. It is a behavior or
delaying tasks despite knowing that there would be a negative outcome of
delay. (Olea, M.T. and Olea, A.N.,2014).

A recent study states that procrastination can be considered

as behavioral, affective and cognitive which could be caused by an
individual’s fear to fail and averseness (Solomon & Rothblum, 1984). It
was found that some individuals may procrastination for some various
reasons. It was observed that individuals tend to experience problems in
lack of motivation and time management to finish a task or to concentrate
in a work. These problems can hinder a person to achieve their academic
goals. (Mandap, C.M., (2016).

A possible factor that may affect students’ academic

performance is the Filipino. Mañana Habit or what is commonly known as
procrastination. One of the most disturbing and cancerous phenomena in
the academic setting is procrastination. Academic procrastinators are
infamous for self-handicapping (Brownlow & Reasinger, 2000), in which
students may associate their failures in their tasks due to their lack of
studying, rather than their own intellectual capacity. Procrastination is
commonly envisioned maladaptively because of its connection to failure of
doing one’s goal. (Tarin, C.A., and Rio, M.C., 2015).

Procrastination is done by people who has problems regarding

motivations, avoiding their tasks or projects, and cramming in the last
minute. Procrastinators prefer to do enjoyable things that would suit their
moods such us browsing the net, playing video games, or something that
they think is something relevant or needed to be done. (“Do It Now, Not
Later: How to Overcome Procrastination”, 2016)

Procrastination is a justification of putting things off. It is the reason

why one’s idea don’t just come freely as it did before. As we procrastinate
we tend to think of other things instead focusing on a task that is needed
to be done. Some it associated to laziness yet it is a choice. The more
you procrastinate, the harder it is to control yourself. As the deadline
comes nearer, the quality of works lessens and stress devours you.
(Gocotano, P.J., (2018).

Procrastinate is a word meant delaying from the context.

Procrastinating is an act of delaying that you don’t want to do.
Procrastinating is also the avoidance of doing a task that is needed to
accomplish. It is also the practice of doing more enjoyable things than the
important or urgent tasks or putting off impending task to a later time.
Procrastination takes time takes place until the "last minute" before the
given deadline. People procrastinate cause of personal issues, health
issues or in academic problem or obligations. Procrastination is also can
lead the feeling of being guilt, depression and self-doubt (Hooda, M.,
(2016).

The increasing studies are often paying attention to what could be

the reason or cause of procrastination. Lack of guidance, laziness, lack of
motivation, irrational time management, social problem, family issues and
influence by peers may also contribute to or be a reason of procrastinating
behavior (Diaz-Morales, J. F., et al. 2008). (He, S., (2017).

Individuals or students who have an attachment into anxiety

tends to have a negative view against their selves, questioning their
capabilities, abilities and action. In this dilemma may turn in some cases
of delay or procrastination on any decision that they would make in fear of
making a wrong choice. Thus, isolating themselves from others thinking
that they cannot fit in. (Kurland, R.M. and Siegel, H. I., 2016).

Academic procrastination has always been considered as a reason

for poor academic performance especially among students who are
academically capable which shown in the study. Although students know
that procrastination can lead to poorer academic performance, students
rarely try to at least overcome procrastination and instead claim that
pressure to perform enables them to complete the assignments. As such
procrastination is also defined as differing action due to indecisiveness or
without a good reason.

Students often assume that projects or certain task won’t take long
to finish as they really will, would then can lead to a false sense of
security when they think that they have still time to accomplished the
task. One of the biggest factors that contributes to procrastination is the
idea that we have to feel inspired or motivated to work on a task at a
particular moment. (Cherry K. 2019)

In an educational institution, the students are the main character of

the plot, without them the school, the teachers, and facilities be
worthless. Education trainees and researchers have been exploring that
contribute to effectively address performance of learners. Many factors
can affect student’s quality of academic achievement may be inside or
outside the school premises. An example of this is a phenomenon we call
procrastination. (Junio, J. J., and Liwag, J. A., 2016).

There are many things or consequences in our daily life especially to

our students. Despite of being too many projects, paper works or
activities. Students often shows struggles towards self-esteem regulatory
failure that is not entirely understood. Students also misunderstood some
things they need to do and come up laying their hands down when it
comes doing a task or a project. Some students prioritize what they think
is easier or something they just want. This is lazy at first and cramming on
every possible way. (Revilla J., 017).

Procrastination is a bad reputation. Everyone is familiar with this kind

of phenomenon since they have already encountered it. This often leads
to disappointments, shame and anxiety. It is negative to everyone but
sometimes it can favor you. There are people called active
procrastinators, these kinds of procrastinators work better under pressure.
They are almost comfortable with fears and feel challenged by
approaching deadlines as they deliberately delay their task. However, this
method doesn’t apply to what we call passive procrastinators. These kinds
of procrastinators are the exact opposite, they get easily anxious which
results to overthinking and not getting a job done. (Oppong T.,2017).

METHODOLOGY
The research design, population and sample, research instruments,
data collection technique, and statistical tools used in this study are all
described in this chapter.

Research Design

This research is a Quantitative Research Specifically Descriptive-

Correlation Design. This Study measures a relationship between
two variables without the researcher controlling either of them (Roxan,
2010). In Addition, this kind of research design will help us as a researcher
to know what are the factors and experiences that Student of Liceo de
Davao particularly Weekend class students for having a procrastinating
mentality and how it has become a source of academic stress for them.

Population and Sample

The target participants of this study are thirty (30) respondents of

Weekend Class Students of Liceo de Davao, Tagum City. We did the survey
through handing out questionnaires and record their responses.

We use Simple Random Sampling with the Weekend class students

of Liceo de Davao and each member of the population has an equal
chance of being included in the sample, which is chosen totally by chance.

Instrumentation
A questionnaire was the primary instrument of this study it has
three parts, part I covers the profile of the respondents. Part II is asking
the respondents about their experiences of procrastinating academic
activities. While the part three or the last part of the research
questionnaire, the respondents are asking if the procrastinate habits leads
them to academic stress and how they cope up that kind of struggles. This
study conducted last October 6,2024 with the 30 individuals of Liceo de
Davao students under the Weekend class program.

Data Collection Procedure

The following steps were employed in gathering the data:

First, through Simple Random Sampling Technique, the participants

were identified. They were requested to sign a consent form and agree to
the condition stipulated that their participation is voluntary and that they
were willing to impart their knowledge as needed in the study.

Second, the participants were given an orientation about the study

and were asked to participate through answering our survey form
individually through hand out questionnaires as part of data collection.
The process started with an outline the purpose of the discussion and sets
the parameters of the interview in terms of length and confidentiality.
Researcher also spent some time explaining and answering the
participants if they have some concern.
